 Bachelor Degree/ GPA

The first key degree must be a Bachelor level degree (minimum 3 years full-time study). After the completion of an acceptable first key degree, a subsequent key degree can be undertaken which may include a new Bachelor degree, Honours degree, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters, or Doctoral degree. Where multiple key degrees have been completed, the most recently completed key degree will be used as the basis of the GPA assessment.

A subsequent key degree can be a new bachelor level degree, or an approved Honours, Graduate Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters, or Doctoral degree after completion of an acceptable first Bachelor degree. Where multiple key degrees have been completed, the most recently completed key degree will be used as the basis of the GPA assessment.

Applicants must have achieved a UQ equivalent GPA of 5.0/7.0 or above in the designated key degree.

PLEASE NOTE: Competitive applicants with a GEMSAS GPA of between 5.0/7.0 and 5.75/7.0 will be reviewed to determine equivalency to the UQ GPA assessment method as outlined in the University's Admission to Coursework Procedure-Schedule 3. There will be no variation to the GPA assessment methodology for periods of study that were affected by COVID-19.

A new key degree must be completed at the end of Semester 1 in the year of application to be included in the assessment. Current study assessments are only available for applicants who are currently completing their first key degree.

Qualifications must be an AQF Level 7 or above to be considered as a key degree. Grades will only be included in the GPA assessment for subjects contributing to the completion of the key degree.

The GPA for the UQ preference is calculated over the entire duration of the degree. All subjects studied while enrolled in the key degree are included in the GPA calculation, regardless of whether they counted towards the award of the degree. Any other study for which credit was given towards the degree must also be included, this includes failed attempts at subjects in earlier degrees that were repeated and passed to attain credit in the new degree. Where the degree was completed as part of a combined, dual, or parallel degree, all subjects studied towards both degrees are included in the calculation of the GPA. This includes dual Bachelor/Master degrees that have an integrated delivery of content.

UQ’s GPA assessments are weighted by credit value of the subjects rather than the year in which the subjects were completed. Letter grades are used in all GPA calculations by UQ. Percentages are only used when equivalent letter grades are unavailable.

Applicants are advised not to include a UQ preference if in the year of application their first key degree cannot be completed with a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0 by COB 23 December 2026.

Current study assessments

UQ will only consider a current study assessment if:

  1. The applicant is currently completing their first key degree, and
  2. The applicant is in their final year of study in the first key degree, and
  3. The progressive GPA of the first key degree is above 5.0, and
  4. The first key degree is expected to be completed before COB 23 December 2026.

A conditional offer made based on a current study assessment will be withdrawn if either the minimum overall GPA of 5.0 is not achieved or the first key degree is not completed by COB 23 December 2026.

Currency of qualification

If an applicant’s key degree was completed more than 10 years prior to the proposed commencement date, it will not be accepted for admission unless the applicant has completed at least half (0.50) a full-time equivalent year (FTE) of subsequent coursework study (at bachelor level or higher) with a UQ equivalent GPA 5.00/7.00. This additional period of study must have been completed in the 10 years preceding commencement of the MD.

Any credit received from prior studies or work experience will not contribute to the 0.50 FTE requirement or the assessed GPA.

The grades from these additional studies will not be included in the key degree’s GPA assessment.

GAMSAT

Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 50 in each section. Applicants with any section score below 50 are deemed ineligible. UQ uses an unweighted GAMSAT score (an average of the three sections rounded to six decimal places).

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Applicants

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants can submit their application directly to UQ’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit, information about the process is detailed here.

The GAMSAT is not mandatory for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants at UQ. However, those who choose to sit the GAMSAT can also apply through GEMSAS, listing UQ as a preference, while also submitting a direct entry application to UQ.

Central Queensland -Wide Bay Regional Medical Pathway and Darling Downs - South West Medical Pathway (MP)

The University of Queensland has partnered with regional Hospital and Health Services to secure long-term locally trained workforces to deliver positive, sustained improvements in the health outcomes for the regional, rural and remote communities of Queensland.

To apply for these pathways, you must select UQ as your first, second or third preference (1, 2 or 3). On the UQ preference page you can select the Doctor of Medicine – Regional Queensland pathway and preferred region. Region preference options will be linked with Tier eligibility. Region preferences will be considered where places are available; however, we cannot guarantee you will receive an offer for your preferred pathway or location.

Selected applicants for the Central Queensland-Wide Bay Regional Medical Pathway (CQ-WB RMP) will complete all 4 years of their medical studies in Central Queensland (based from Rockhampton) or Wide Bay (based from Bundaberg and Hervey Bay – Years 3 and 4). Selected applicants for the Darling Downs – South West Medical Pathway (DD-SW MP) will complete al 4 years of their medical studies in Darling Downs – South West (based from Toowoomba).

Applicants will be considered on the following criteria:

RMP Tier 1: Applicants from Central Queensland - Wide Bay

Applicants who have resided in Central Queensland and Wide Bay region for 5 consecutive years, or 10 years cumulatively. Refer to the Location Eligibility information here.

MP Tier 1: Applicants from Darling Downs - South West

Applicants who have resided in Darling Downs and South West region for 5 consecutive years, or 10 years cumulatively. Refer to the Location Eligibility information here.

Tier 2: Applicants with a rural background (excludes Tier 1)

Applicants who have resided in any rural location in Australia for 5 consecutive years, or 10 years cumulatively (MM2-7).

Tier 3: Any other interested applicants

Any applicant who is interested in undertaking their medical studies in regional Queensland.

Regional Queensland applicants will be ranked and offered by Tier order, from Tier 1 through to 2 and then 3. Those who are not selected for an offer to a regional Queensland place will be ranked and considered with the Greater Brisbane (metropolitan) applicants.

Rural entry

In accordance with agreed government quotas, The University of Queensland will offer 28.5% of places to students from a rural background.

Students will be eligible for consideration in the Rural Background Students (RBS) sub quota if they have spent at least 5 years continuously, or 10 years cumulatively, living in a rural Australian area as determined by the Modified Monash Model 2023 system. As approved rural background applicants compete for places within a sub quota, the interview short listing threshold may be lower for this cohort.

UQ awards two adjustments to the unweighted average GAMSAT score to assist rural background applicants in being more competitive for non-bonded places. All other standard selection policies and procedures still apply.

Applicants who wish to be considered through this scheme will need to provide documentary evidence to GEMSAS as detailed in the Rurality section of the GEMSAS Guide and the GEMSAS website.

Interview

Interview Selection:

Selection for interview will be based on a 50:50 combination of the unweighted average GAMSAT score and the assessed GPA (converted to a percentage). If required, the GPA will be used as a tiebreaker.

Applicants are ranked for invite to interview within the pathways they apply. Applicants that have indicated that they would like to be considered for the Central Queensland – Wide Bay Regional Medical Pathway (CQ-WB RMP) or Darling Downs – South West Medical Pathway (DD-SW MP) will be ranked for those pathways first and within each tier (Tier 1 first, followed by Tier 2, then Tier 3). Applicants not ranked for an invitation to interview for the CQ-WB RMP or DD-SW MP will be ranked and considered for an invitation to interview in the Greater Brisbane pathway.

Further information on selection for interviews is provided at the following link: https://study.uq.edu.au/admissions/doctor-medicine/graduate-entry/how-to-apply

Invitation to Interview:

Applicants selected for interview must accept their invite to interview in the GEMSAS portal AND book an interview time directly with UQ by the booking due date. Booking details will be outlined in interview invites sent via email. Please ensure you check your emails regularly including your junk mailbox.

Requests for special consideration of a late booking, due to not finalising your booking or other system issues, outside of the open times will not be considered. If you experience any issues with your booking, you must contact us during the booking window for assistance (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.). A lack of knowledge or awareness of the procedure and the associated timelines does not meet the criteria for a late booking to be considered.

Interview Format:

Interviews will be conducted in the Multiple-Mini Interview (MMI) format consisting of several interview stations, each with a single interviewer. MMIs will be held online in September 2026.

Further information on the interview format is provided on the UQ Multiple-Mini Interview (MMI) webpage: https://study.uq.edu.au/admissions/doctor-medicine/find-your-entry-pathway/multiple-mini-interviews-doctor-medicine

Offers

Interviewed applicants will be ranked in merit order in each pathway with Central Queensland – Wide Bay Regional Medical Pathway (CQ-WB RMP) and Darling Downs – South West Medical Pathway (DD-SW MP) offers determined first.

Eligible applicants indicating they wish to be considered for CQ-WB RMP or DD-SW MP are ranked in merit order within each tier, with offers made to eligible applicants in Tier 1 first, followed by Tier 2, then Tier 3.

  • Eligible applicants in Tier 1 CQ-WB RMP or DD-SW MP will receive an offer in accordance with the applicable pathway location where places exist. Where no further places exist, offers may be made to other pathway locations pending availability.. Tier 1 CQ-WB RMP applicants may preference either Central Queensland (Rockhampton) or Wide Bay (Bundaberg an Hervey Bay), however, we cannot guarantee applicants will receive an offer for their preferred region. Offers may be made to either location pending availability of places.
  • Location preference for eligible applicants in Tier 2 or Tier 3 for the CQ-WB RMP and DD-SW MP will be considered, however we cannot guarantee applicants will receive an offer to their preferred pathway or region. Offers may be made for either pathway or region pending availability of places.
  • Applicants unsuccessful in receiving a CQ-WB RMP or DD-SW MP offer, will then be considered for the Greater Brisbane pathway

Applicants who accept a CQ-WB RMP or DD-SW MP offer are committing to undertake all 4 years of the medical program in regional Queensland. Transfers between pathways will only be considered in exceptional circumstances and where additional places exist.

Applicants from all entry pathways are then ranked in merit order to determine whether they will receive a non-bonded (CSP) or bonded medical place (BMP). Non-bonded (CSP) places will be offered first, followed by BMP. Rural Background (RBS) places will be filled from both bonded and non-bonded places. Please note, applicants may specify the types of places they wish to be considered for, however no consideration is given to preferred offer type when offers are made. Please refer to Schedule 3 of PPL Admissions to Coursework Procedure-Schedule 3.

Offers made to applicants in the final year of their first key degree will be conditional upon the completion of their current degree before COB 23 December in the year of application with a final overall degree GPA of 5.0 or better.

Offers are made in November with a small number of subsequent offers in December and January (if required).
