Melbourne MD Selection Policies

All applicants to the University of Melbourne are asked to refer to the MD Selection Guidelines for detailed selection policy information. These guidelines can be accessed via http://go.unimelb.edu.au/m7ki .

Clinical School Zone allocation

Most of the Melbourne MD is delivered through clinical schools based within health services. Information on each clinical school is available from: https://go.unimelb.edu.au/hht6

For information on the process by which students are allocated to clinical schools, refer to: Clinical-School-Region-and-Site-Allocation-Procedure.pdf

Bachelor Degree/ GPA/ GAMSAT

A minimum GPA of 5 and a minimum GAMSAT Score of 50 in each of the three sections of the GAMSAT is required. These are minimum requirements only, and selection into the course is highly competitive.

The Grade Point Average (GPA) is measured by considering the last 3 years of the applicant's undergraduate coursework studies (only including Honours where the Honours Degree is completed by mid-year in the year of application, and the results are available for selection). GPA years will be weighted: the final-minus-2 x 1, the final-minus-1 x 2 and the final x 2.

If an Honours degree is not completed by mid-year in the year of application, then GPA weightings will be applied by weighting the final three pre-honours undergraduate years, as outlined above. An undergraduate degree is defined as a degree of at least three years duration when studied full-time, or equivalent, from a recognised university. However, accelerated entry and conversion degrees may be accepted, depending on the level and extent of credited study, at the discretion of the selection committee. Re-ranking may be undertaken in the applicant’s favour for a small number of applicants with a high level of performance in a PhD qualification (completed within 10 years of the commencement date for the MD) in a cognate discipline (strict quotas apply).

Please note that results for 2020 subjects completed before the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e. January 2020 to March 2020) will be included in entry score calculations (All Entry Pathways). Results for honours completed in 2020 will be included in entry score calculations for 2022 and all future intakes (Excluded for Guaranteed Entry Pathway). Please note Honours results are not included in WAM calculations for the Guaranteed Entry Pathway. All other 2020 subject results (i.e. completed from April 2020 to December 2020) will be excluded from entry score calculations for 2022 and all future intakes (All Entry Pathways). For the avoidance of doubt, subjects from all other study periods will be included in entry score calculations (All Entry Pathways).

The above relates to all pathways, including the standard pathway and Indigenous pathway that use GPA for entry and the Guaranteed Entry pathway which uses WAM for entry.

Currency of qualification

Undergraduate degree must have been completed within 10 years of commencing the Doctor of Medicine. For applicants whose most recently completed undergraduate degree was completed 10 or more years before 1 January 2027, a Graduate Diploma, Master or PhD degree, or equivalent, must have been completed within the last 10 years.

MCAT

Only international students who reside outside of Australia at the time of application may apply using an MCAT score.

Interview

Multi-Mini Interviews (MMI): The interview component for GEMSAS applicants will be an eight station Multi-Mini Interview. Each station takes approximately five minutes and has a single assessor.

The MMI aims to assess non-academic qualities including cultural sensitivity, maturity, collaboration, reliability and communication skills.

The stations could include practical tasks, commenting on short films, or explaining your thinking.

Further important information on how the MMI is applied to guaranteed entry and GEMSAS applications can be found here: https://go.unimelb.edu.au/m7ki

Offers

Interview offers for standard pathway applicants will be made on the basis of a combined ranked list using weighted GPA and the GAMSAT score (where each of the three sections is weighted equally). The GPA and GAMSAT score are weighted equally to create the ranked list for interview.

Course offers will be made on the basis of a combined ranked list where ranks by GAMSAT will be weighted by 25%, GPA by 25%, and interview by 50%. Eligible Guaranteed Entry and Indigenous pathway applications will not be subject to ranking. Eligible rural background applicants may be selected above higher-ranked applicants, in order to satisfy the University's rural-background quota.

Conditional Offers

If an offer is made where a degree is not yet complete, the offer will be conditional. When the degree is completed and the final results are received a final GPA will be calculated. Applicants will be expected to maintain or exceed the GPA used when shortlisted for interview. An applicant whose final GPA drops, but only by 0.3 or less, will in most cases have their offer confirmed. If conditions aren't met by the specified date on the offer letter the offer will be withdrawn.

Applicants who, in the event of receiving a course offer, intend to take an early exit from a combined degree (bachelor/bachelor double degree) and complete a single degree must declare this when submitting their application.

Successful applicants are required to meet condition by 23 December 2026.
