Interviews

Some GEMSAS applicants are invited to interview. If offered an interview it will be at one Medical School only. Only interviewed applicants are considered for course place offers.

The interview is designed to assess qualities considered by the Medical Schools to be associated with success in both Medical School and later in practice. Interviews will be conducted by trained interviewers. Academic performance is not discussed at the interview.

Your interview score will be standardised for use by your lower preferenced Medical Schools. If you’re unsuccessful in gaining a course offer at the Medical School where you were interviewed, this standardised score will be used.

For interview dates and formats (i.e. if the interview will be held online and/or if in-person attendance is required), see the Medical School entries in the Medical Schools Admissions Guide.

How are applicants selected for interviews?

Applicants are selected for an interview based on performance in one or more of the following:

  • GAMSAT (Graduate Medical School Admissions Test)
  • Qualifying/key degree (as indicated by the GPA)
  • In a special application or written application
  • The Casper test where required.

See the table below for an overview of how GEMSAS Medical Schools rank applicants for interview. For detailed information on how each Medical School ranks applicants for interview and their interview process, please refer to the individual Medical School pages.

How will GEMSAS contact applicants regarding interviews?

Applicants will be advised if they are invited to interview by email. The invitation and/or the Medical School’s entry in the Medical Schools Admission Guide will provide information about the interview arrangements (e.g. when the interviews will be held and their format - virtually and/or in person; required identification).

Applicants must meet all expenses associated with attending an interview.

Applicants who are applying in 2026 for entry in 2027, will only receive one interview offer from a Medical School participating in GEMSAS. An exception to this is applicants who have applied directly for the University of Melbourne via Guaranteed Entry Pathway, MD Rural Pathway or the Indigenous MD Student Entry Pathway may receive an interview offer via these pathways in addition to any interview offer made via the GEMSAS process.

Applicants unsuccessful in receiving an interview invitation at any of the Medical Schools they applied to will be notified by email by the GEMSAS team.

A Medical School at which you weren’t interviewed reserves the right to contact you for a conversation about course and Medical School requirements before a course offer is made. This conversation is not an interview and offer of a course place is not guaranteed.
