Grade Point Average (GPA) Calculations
What is the GPA?
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) reflects your academic performance in the qualifying/key degree used to support your GEMSAS application.
GPA is one of several factors used by medical schools when assessing applicants for interview and place offers. Other factors may include:
- GAMSAT performance
- Casper test results
- Interview performance
- Eligibility for school-specific adjustments or bonuses
Your field of study and the institution where you completed your qualifying/key degree do not affect how you GPA is calculated.
How is my GPA calculated?
GEMSAS calculates GPAs for all applicants who meet minimum eligibility requirements.
While GEMPASS medical schools use a shared framework to calculate a base GPA, individual schools may apply their own rules (for example, which studies are included). As a result, multiple GPAs may be calculated for each applicant.
To understand how GPA is calculated and used for selection, refer to the individual medical school entries in the Medical Schools Admissions Guide. You can also use the GPA calculator to estimate your GPA.
COVID-19 impacted grades (University of Melbourne)
If you received COVID-19 impacted grades from the University of Melbourne (identified by a '^' on your transcript), you must request that these results be transferred through the Automated Results Transfer Service (ARTS) if you want them included in your GEMSAS GPA.*
Submit your request:
- At least 10 working days before submitting your GEMSAS application (for completed or discontinued studies), or
- By Friday 19 June 2026 (for currently enrolled studies)
*Exception: If you are applying for the University of Melbourne Doctor of Medicine, COVID-19 impacted grades from 2021 will be included in your GPA automatically. Refer to the Doctor of Medicine Selection guidelines for details.
