After you apply
GEMSAS is a computerised matching system which calculates GPAs and bonuses, assesses applications for eligibility, and uses an algorithm to rank and allocate eligible applicants.
As part of their application, applicants can select up to six Medical Schools which are ranked in order of preference.
Applications will be assessed according to the selection rules of each Medical School on the applicant’s GEMSAS preference list. GEMSAS will assess the eligibility and competitiveness of all applicants for their first preference medical school. If the applicant is ineligible or their ranking is not competitive enough, they will be assessed for the second-preference school and so on until the applicant has either been allocated an interview at a medical school on their preference list or all preferences have been exhausted.
Applications will be assessed again after interviews have been conducted, according to the selection rules of each Medical School on the applicant’s GEMSAS preference list. Interview scores will be standardised and used by all participating Medical Schools. GEMSAS will assess the competitiveness of all interviewed applicants for their first-preference medical school. If the applicant is not ranked highly enough, they will be assessed for the second-preference Medical School and so on until the applicant has either been offered a place at a medical school on their preference list or all preferences have been exhausted.
Applicants cannot be considered for a course place offer at a Medical School which is a higher preference than the Medical School at which they were interviewed. The Medical School has decided that the applicant does not meet their minimum selection criteria or that their application is were not competitive . This cannot be changed in the subsequent place offer rounds despite how well the applicant performed at the interview.
Once you have submitted your application, your preferences/types of places cannot be changed.
Exceptions:
The University of Notre Dame Australia, Sydney may accept one change of type of place per application year should you wish to add or remove the Full Fee-paying type of place. No other offer type changes will be considered. Changes must be made in writing directly with the Institution by 4pm AEST 2nd October 2025. See the University of Notre Dame’s entry in the Medicine Admissions Guide for details.
The University of Melbourne may accept one change of type of place per application year should you wish to add or remove the Full Fee-paying type of place. No other offer type changes will be considered. All changes must be submitted through Melbourne Medical School's 'Fee-Type Change Request' form no later than 4pm AEST 26th September 2025. See the University of Melbourne’s entry in the Medicine Admissions Guide for further details.
The University of Wollongong will accept changes to place type, campus type and medical education track nominations throughout the application processing period. Any changes submitted will override the previous nominations on record. Changes will need to be submitted to UOW GSM through the “Campus, place type, and Med Ed track nomination form“, no later than 4pm AEST 1st October 2025. See the University of Wollongong’s entry in the Medicine Admissions Guide for details.
You cannot be considered for an offer at a Medical School above the preference of the Medical School at which you were interviewed. Your higher preferences have already decided that either you do not meet their minimum criteria or you were not ranked highly enough to get an interview offer. That status cannot change in the subsequent offer rounds despite how well you perform at interview.
The standardisation of interview scores is a statistical process which uses means and standard deviations from the different interview score distributions to put all the sets of scores onto the same scale. This ensures comparability between institutions.
GEMSAS is not able to provide any ranking data or interview scores. Many factors impact on who gets an offer and, apart from the selection components used, there are also factors at play including your willingness to accept bonded or fee places, whether you are a rural or an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicant and whether or not you were eligible for bonuses/adjustment or for special sub-quota places.
The main round of course place offers are issued in late October/early November. If required to fill places, additional offers are issued in late November until end of January.
When allocations are being made, Medical Schools will allocate quotas for each offer type. The allocation will be made using that Medical School's ranked list in order: CSP, BMP and FEE (if applicable). Some Medical Schools will ask you to rank all offer types and some will just want you to indicate which offer types you are prepared to accept if offered. To list only one offer type means you limit the available places that can be offered to you.
If offered a course place:
- Note that if you decline the course place offer, or let the offer lapse, you cannot be considered for another place in that selection intake. You can however reapply in a subsequent year.
- Your offer may be a ‘conditional offer’. This means you need to meet offer condition/s before the offer is firm (e.g., provision of subject results and/or evidence of course completion for studies undertaken in the year the GEMSAS application was submitted and maintenance of a minimum GPA for these studies).
- Please promptly notify us if you decide to decline GEMSAS interview and/or course place offers, or wish to withdraw your application. This enables the timely issue of offers to other GEMSAS applicants (email

GEMSAS will inform applicants if they didn’t receive a course place offer. Unsuccessful applicants are automatically considered for any places that become available in that intake, and are welcome to reapply in a subsequent year.
Applicants are made a maximum of one offer per application cycle. Once you have been made an offer, you are not eligible for subsequent round offers in the same application cycle, even if you decline the offer you have received.
If you are made an offer of a place, and you have not:
- completed your degree OR
- prerequisites for the University of QueenslandOR
- you are undertaking additional bachelor or postgraduate studies for UWA,
then the offer will be conditional. When GEMSAS receives your final results we will calculate your final GPA and check that it meets any conditions the Medical School may have put on your offer (e.g. maintaining a stated GPA). If it does, your offer will be confirmed, and if it doesn't meet the conditions the offer will be withdrawn. If you studied at an ARTS university, GEMSAS will try to get your final results and confirmation of completion of your degree electronically.
We may have difficulty obtaining your final results and confirmation of completion of your degree. In these instances, we may request your assistance to encourage your university to upload your results and completion data and to authorise the release of this information to GEMSAS.
If you studied at a non-ARTS university you will need to upload an official academic transcript that shows final results and evidence of completion of your degree.
Selection is very complex and many factors impact on whether or not you will get an offer. There are many reasons why an applicant with the same or lower GPA and GAMSAT scores as you may have been offered a place when you were not.
- They may have performed better in the interview and/or portfolio or personal statements
- They may have come from a rural background
- They may be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island descent
- They may have been eligible for bonuses or adjustments.
- They may have accepted a BMP or Fee place where you indicated that you would not be prepared to accept one of these places
- They may have accepted a place in a special sub-quota
If you do not receive an offer of a place in the main round of offers after interviews are completed, your application will remain in the system for consideration by GEMSAS Medical Schools. Additional offers may be made during December and January after the final results of applicants completing their qualifying/key degree are known.
Please note, unfortunately it is not possible for applicants to change their preferences after the application closing date.
There are many applicants for GEMSAS Medical School places who will not be offered an interview or a place. If you have been offered a place in another course or by an institution not participating in GEMSAS and you intend to accept that place, then please be considerate of fellow applicants and withdraw your application for all GEMPASS Australia courses as soon as possible. Deferral is usually not possible; however these decisions are at the discretion of the individual medical schools. Please consult the Medical Schools’ websites or discuss the possibility of being permitted to defer with the Medical Schools to which you wish to apply.
You will be considered by each of the Medical Schools you have applied for in preference order. This means you would be considered for all place types at your first preference before being considered by your next preference, and so on.
When allocations are being made, Medical Schools will allocate quotas for each offer type. The allocation will be made using that Medical School's ranked list in the following order: CSP, BMP and FEE (if applicable). Some Medical Schools will ask you to rank all offer types, and some will just want you to indicate which offer types you are prepared to accept if offered. To list only one offer type means you limit the available places that can be offered to you.
For further information on how each school makes offers, please refer to the individual Medical Schools entries in the Medicine Admissions Guide.
The ranking of your application for a given medical school would typically not be impacted by where it is placed on your preference list. However, some bonuses or pathways may require you to list a school at a certain preference or higher - please refer to the individual school entries in the Medicine Admissions Guide for further details.
As you can receive a maximum of 1 offer per application cycle, placing a course lower on your preference list means you can only receive an offer for it if you do not receive one for any of your higher preferences.
