School-specific enquiries should be directed to the schools directly. Contact information can be found on the website at www.gemsas.edu.au/medical-schools and in this Guide, under Institutional contacts.
Information about the graduate entry medicine admissions process for GEMPASS Australia schools (GEMSAS) can be found on the website https://www.gemsas.edu.au/gemsas-processes.
* The University of Sydney, Monash University and Flinders University are not participating in GEMSAS. Applicants for places at these universities must apply directly to them. Applicants can visit their websites at http://www.sydney.edu.au/, http://www.monash.edu/ and www.flinders.edu.au.
Offers
Successful applicants will be given a firm date by which to accept an offer of a place and offers not accepted by that date, according to the school's instructions, will lapse.
If an applicant declines an offer of a place, or allows their offer to lapse, they will not be considered for another place or receive another offer, in the 2025 intake.
If you have been offered a place in another course or by an institution not participating in GEMSAS and you intend to accept that place, then please be considerate of fellow applicants and withdraw your application for all GEMPASS Australia courses as soon as possible.
Deferral
Deferral of a place is unlikely to be approved. However, some universities permit deferral, particularly to complete an Honours year. Please consult the schools' websites or discuss the possibility of being permitted to defer with the universities to which you wish to apply.
Exclusion
An applicant who has been excluded from any university must indicate this when they apply. The schools may contact applicants for further details on receipt of the application data.
Admission and application irregularities
Applicants should be aware that the presentation of forged documents is a criminal offence in Australia and that universities may take appropriate action in such cases.
All tertiary study must be declared in the application. For the purpose of university admission, the withholding of information and the submission of incorrect or misleading information are deemed fraudulent. Actions taken in such cases may include cancellation of an application for admission, withdrawal of an offer of admission, or cancellation of an enrolment.
Applicants who submit fraudulent documents, or otherwise seek to gain an advantage by fraudulent means, or who engage in any misconduct during the application process may be banned from future applications through GEMSAS.
Only your first submitted application will be processed, regardless of which application has been paid for.
Misconduct policy
Please see our website for further information.
Schools' policies
Each university may have its own additional admission policies (which may include policies on prior or current studies, enrolment irregularities and/or transfers). To confirm if there are additional policies, review each school's entry in this Guide and the websites of the schools to which you intend to apply.
Diversity and Inclusion
GEMPASS supports a culture of inclusivity and the provision of equivalent opportunities to access medical education. Enabling effective inclusion requires a collaborative effort by an applicant, the Medical School and the university. We ask that applicants read the Medical Deans Inclusive Medical Education Guidance. If you anticipate you will need particular support to participate in the medical program, it is important that you make contact with your preferred medical school promptly to discuss what reasonable adjustments are possible, if offered a place.
Refund policy
The application fee is not refundable unless required by law. Therefore, you remain liable to pay the application fee even if you withdraw your application after having paid the fee, are not offered a place in a course, or you decline an offer of a place. The Australian Consumer Law, set out in Schedule 2 of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth), provides consumers with a number of protections including guarantees that cannot be excluded, restricted, or modified. This refund policy does not exclude, restrict or modify the rights you may have under the Australian Consumer Law or any other applicable laws. If you believe you have a right to claim a refund, please contact
Appeals process
You are encouraged to commence your application as soon as possible, even if you do not have all the required documentation. You will be able to log back in and amend your application until you either submit your application or until the application closing date (at which time your application must be submitted). You are not considered an applicant until you have created your application online (i.e. registered and selected medicine, within the application period of 1 to 31 May of the current year), and have received a valid GEMSAS VTAC ID. GEMSAS Policies, including the GEMSAS Extenuating Circumstances Policy and Procedure, and the GEMSAS Appeals Policy and Procedure, only apply to medicine applicants with a valid current year GEMSAS VTAC ID.

Application Process*
Information in this section is generally common to all the schools but is subject to the specific requirements outlined in the school entries and on the school websites.
There are three components of the application process:
The GAMSAT validity period has been changed from 2 years to 4 years. GAMSAT results obtained from different sittings are directly comparable and can be used when applying to universities for up to four consecutive years in Australia.
To apply in 2024 for entry in 2025, ONLY the following results can be used: September 2020, March 2021, September 2021, March 2022, September 2022, March 2023, September 2023 and March 2024.
All applicants for Commonwealth Supported Places and other domestic places at graduate entry schools (i.e. citizens/permanent residents of Australia and citizens of New Zealand) must have a current score on the Graduate Australian Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT).
GAMSAT results are valid for four years. If you sit the September test in 2024 you may use the results obtained to apply in 2025, 2026, 2027 and 2028, for a graduate entry course commencing 2026, 2027, 2028 and 2029 respectively.
There is a very helpful table in the FAQs section of this guide and information that shows the validity of all the GAMSAT tests at https://gamsat.acer.org/results/currency-of-results
Your GAMSAT results show a score for each of the three test Sections and an Overall Score. All GEMPASS Australia medical schools (except the University of Melbourne, The University of Queensland and the University of Notre Dame Australia Sydney and Fremantle) rank applicants using the Overall GAMSAT Score (with required minimum Section scores normally around 50). The University of Melbourne, The University of Queensland, the University of Notre Dame Australia Sydney and Fremantle, take an average of the three sections of the GAMSAT, rather than the Overall GAMSAT Score. The University of Wollongong uses the GAMSAT as a hurdle for selection, with a minimum Overall GAMSAT Score and minimum Section scores required. The acceptable GAMSAT scores may be different for each of the universities and may vary from year to year. When deciding whether or not to submit an application, you are advised to make sure that your GAMSAT scores fall within the acceptable ranges reported in the individual university entries in this Guide. You can evaluate your standing in relation to other candidates who sat GAMSAT in the same year as you did, by consulting the chart included with your Statement of Results. Please note that neither GEMSAS nor ACER staff have the authority to review individual GAMSAT transcripts or GAMSAT results or to offer advice on the likelihood of selection. GAMSAT candidates are responsible for determining their eligibility to apply.
Registration for the GAMSAT and application for admission to the graduate programs are separate processes. Any GAMSAT specific questions should be directed to ACER who manage the GAMSAT test.
Applications are made on-line through the ApplyGEMSAS.edu.au website. There is a link to this on the home page of the GEMSAS.edu.au website.
Applicants are selected for interview based on one or more of the following criteria:
- performance in GAMSAT;
- performance in a qualifying/key degree (as indicated by GPA);
- performance in a special application or written application where required;
- performance in the Casper test where required.
The Australian National University and The University of Western Australia combine both standardised GAMSAT and standardised GPA when ranking applicants for interview. Deakin University (General Stream and Rural Training Stream Tier 2 and 3) combines the first two criteria when ranking applicants for interview. The GPA is weighted.
Deakin University (General Stream) combines the first two criteria when ranking applicants for interview. The GPA is weighted.
Griffith University ranks applicants for interview based on selections rank derived from a 50/50 combination of an unweighted GPA (converted to a percentage) and the overall GAMSAT score.
Macquarie University uses a minimum weighted GPA of 5.0/7.0 and a minimum score of 50 in each of the three sections and 50 overall in the GAMSAT as hurdles; then ranks applicants based on a selection rank derived from a 50/50 combination of standardised weighted GPA and standardised overall GAMSAT score.
The University of Melbourne combines the first two criteria when ranking applicants for interview. The University of Melbourne uses an unweighted GAMSAT.
The University of Notre Dame Australia (Fremantle) and The University of Notre Dame Australia (Sydney) rank applicants for interview by the standardised result of GPA, unweighted GAMSAT, Casper, and bonus points, weighted 30:30:30:10. Interviewees are ranked for offer by a standardised combination of the GAMSAT, GPA, Casper, and bonus points scores (50%) and interview (50%).
The University of Queensland uses a minimum unweighted GPA of 5.0/7.0 and a minimum score of 50 in each of the three sections of the GAMSAT as qualifying hurdles, then ranks applicants for interview based on selections rank derived from a 50/50 combination of an unweighted GPA (converted to a percentage) and an unweighted average GAMSAT score rounded to six decimal places. If required, GPA will be used as a tie breaker.
The University of Wollongong uses a minimum weighted GPA of 5.5/7.0 and a minimum score of 50 in each of the three sections and 50 overall in the GAMSAT as qualifying hurdles, then ranks applicants for interview using 50/50 combination of Casper score and UOW MD Admissions bonuses.Supporting documentation will be required if:

[1] See Appendix A
All applicants must have completed, or be in the final year, of a Bachelor or Honours degree. Undergraduate and postgraduate Australian degrees must be from a Commonwealth-accredited institution as listed by TEQSA (see http://www.teqsa.gov.au/national-register). (NB. Wollongong require that qualifying/key degrees are from a University). Overseas degrees must be recognised by the Australian Department of Education (DE) (previously AEI-NOOSR) or UK ENIC (previously UK NARIC) as comparable to an Australian Bachelor or Postgraduate degree. Your qualifications will be assessed for comparability as part of your application process.
Please do not contact the Australian Department of Education (DE) for assessment of your degree.
For those in the final year of study, satisfactory completion of the degree in 2024 will be a condition of entry. Note that if you cannot complete and provide evidence of completion of your degree in the 2024 calendar year, any offer you have received that is conditional upon completion of your current degree may be withdrawn.
Normally a bachelor degree of 3 years full time equivalent (FTE) study is required, this study can be part-time study and does not need to be completed on a full time basis.
Applicants enrolled in a two-year degree, a three or four year embedded degree, graduate entry programs or one-year conversion degree, or those who have completed a higher degree without a prior Bachelor degree should consult their preferred school/s to ascertain eligibility. Note that not all schools accept such degrees. Please see individual school entries in this Guide.
GEMSAS will calculate a Grade Point Average (GPA) from electronic copies of academic transcripts (from ARTS institutions) or transcripts provided by the applicant. Scans of original hard-copy transcripts or an official and secure electronic copy of your transcript will be needed if you have completed your degree or any part of your qualifying/key degree at an overseas university or any university not included in the list of ARTS institutions in Appendix A.
Please note that we do not use hard copy transcripts where results are available via ARTS, and we will not accept transcripts provided as clarification regarding study not shown in ARTS.
Applicants may wish to calculate their GPA according to the instructions on the GEMSAS website (www.gemsas.edu.au/gpa-calculations). A GPA calculator is available on the application page (https://applygemsas.edu.au/gemsas/#/gpa-calc) for use. Please note that any GPA calculated by an applicant will be an estimated GPA and used only for the information of the applicant.
No preference is given to graduates with particular Bachelor degrees. GEMPASS Australia encourages individuals from diverse educational backgrounds who will bring to the profession a variety of talents and interests.
Exception: Applicants to Medicine at the University of Queensland must have successfully completed approved prerequisite studies in “Integrative Cell and Tissue Biology” and “Systems Physiology”. See the UQ school entry for details.
The GPA indicates the level of performance in the qualifying/key degree. There is no differentiation of GPA between institutions or courses. It should be emphasised that a science major is not a prerequisite, and that academic excellence in other areas, such as the humanities and social sciences, is encouraged and recognised.
The GEMSAS medical schools have considered options for changing GPA methodology, recognising the impact of COVID-19 on 2020 study. As a result a number of schools have made changes, deciding whether or not to include 2020 results in GPA calculations. See the school entry section for changes/updates.
Applicants who are applying for GEMPASS Australia Medical Schools with a University of Melbourne degree where there are COVID-19 impacted grades should be aware that these COVID-19 impacted grades will not be transferred electronically to GEMSAS via ARTS unless the applicant has requested this change at https://go.unimelb.edu.au/w26i in the following timeframe:
- If you are an applicant who has already completed a University of Melbourne degree where there were Covid affected grades, the request to have Covid affected grades included in the ARTS transfer must be submitted at least 10 business days before submitting your GEMSAS application.
- If you are an applicant who has discontinued a University of Melbourne degree where there were Covid affected grades, the request to have Covid affected grades included in the ARTS transfer must be submitted at least 10 business days before submitting your GEMSAS application.
- If you are an applicant who is still undertaking a University of Melbourne degree where there are Covid affected grades, the request to have Covid affected grades included in the ARTS transfer must be submitted by Friday 21 June.
If the applicant chooses not to request this change, GEMSAS and medical schools will not be able to view these results via ARTS and therefore they will not be included in GPA calculations*
*Exception: Applicants to Medicine at the University of Melbourne who have completed/are completing a University of Melbourne undergraduate degree where subjects were undertaken in 2021, will have all 2021 results included in GPA calculations for the MD at Melbourne, even if they choose not to have these results transferred via ARTS. Please refer to the Doctor of Medicine Selection guidelines at https://go.unimelb.edu.au/2my6 for further information.
The interview* is designed to assess qualities considered by the schools to be associated with success in both medical school and later practice, and is conducted by trained interviewers. Academic performance is not discussed at the interview. No domestic applicant will receive more than one interview offer from a medical school participating in GEMSAS in the 2024 admissions round, for entry in 2025. The interview score will be standardised for use by lower preferenced schools, if you are not successful in gaining an offer of a place at the school at which you were interviewed.
An exception is for applicants who qualify for the Guaranteed Entry Pathway, MD Rural Pathway or the Indigenous MD Student Entry Pathway at the University of Melbourne. Guaranteed Entry Pathway, MD Rural Pathway and Indigenous MD Student Entry Pathway applicants will be considered by the University of Melbourne separately to the GEMSAS process and must apply directly to the University of Melbourne in accordance with instructions available at
https://study.unimelb.edu.au/find/courses/graduate/doctor-of-medicine/how-to-apply/
All other shortlisted, eligible applicants will be interviewed. Note that if Guaranteed Entry Full Fee eligible applicants wish to be considered for CSP and Bonded Medical Places at the University of Melbourne, they must apply via GEMSAS. If MD Rural Pathway applicants wish to also be considered for a non-bonded CSP and/or place outside of the rural pathway, they must also apply via GEMSAS. If Guaranteed Entry Full Fee, MD Rural Pathway or Indigenous MD Student Entry Pathway eligible applicants wish to be considered by the other medical schools, they are advised to consult the relevant entries in this Guide for application details.
Selected applicants receive an invitation to interview by letter or email. This invitation must be presented on arrival at the medical school for an in-person interview, together with a valid passport or current photo-bearing driver's licence for identification purposes.
Some schools require that you supply a passport photograph prior to interview. If this applies to you, you will be notified when interview invitations are issued, with instructions on how and when to submit your digital photo.
Applicants must meet all expenses associated with attending an interview.
Applicants unsuccessful in receiving an interview at any of the medical schools they applied to will be notified by email by the GEMSAS team. Applicants who were not interviewed will not participate in further processing.
*Interview dates may be subject to change
If you are eligible to be made an offer at a University that did not interview you, the University reserves the right to call you for an informal conversation prior to offers being made. This is to ensure that the applicant is aware of specific course and University requirements. This conversation does not constitute an interview or indicate an offer of a place.
Selection into graduate entry medicine is based on up to six criteria:
- performance in GAMSAT;
- performance as indicated by GPA. Please see school entries for details about qualifying/key degrees and GPA calculations;
- performance in interview;
- performance in a special application or written application where required;
- performance in the Casper test where required.
- eligibilty for ranking bonuses for some schools.
The way in which each university combines these criteria when making their final offers varies. For more information refer to the individual university entries of this Guide. Alternatively, you can consult each university's website for detailed information. Links are available from https://www.gemsas.edu.au/medical-schools/.
A successful application may lead to an offer of one of a range of places, including bonded and full-fee places. When you apply you will be asked (for each school on your preference list), to choose (and for some schools, rank) the types of places you will be prepared to accept. Selection is based on ranked lists and quotas. The quota (i.e. number of places) available for each offer type is restricted. To maximise your chances of receiving an offer at the schools of your choice, consider listing all types of places. If you omit (for instance) the Bonded Medical Program (BMP) offer type and you are ranked to get a BMP offer, it will not be made and you'll drop down to your next preferred school for consideration. Please read carefully all the information about bonded places on the DoH website at https://www.health.gov.au/initiatives-and-programs/bonded-medical-program.
When allocations are being made, schools will allocate quotas for each offer type. The allocation will be made using that school's ranked list in order: CSP, BMP and FEE (if applicable). Some schools will ask you to rank all offer types and some will just want you to indicate which offer types you are prepared to accept if offered. To list only one offer type means you limit the available places that can be offered to you.
- Australia National University (ANU) will allocate place types based on the ranking of the applicant and their preferences.
- For Deakin University you may specify the types of places you wish to be considered for. You will not be considered for a type of place that you have not listed. Offers will be made in the following order: CSP and BMP, with the most highly ranked applicants being offered CSP places and so on down the merit order until all vacancies are filled.
- For Griffith University you must specify the types of places you wish to be considered for in your preferred order. You must also note your preference (1 and 2 or no preference) for the Gold Coast campus and the Sunshine Coast Health Institute teaching location. Allocations will be according to applicant rank and preferences, however your preference is not guaranteed.
- For Macquarie University all places are Full-Fee paying and will be allocated based on the ranking of the applicant.
- For the University of Melbourne you may specify the types of places you wish to be considered for. You will not be considered for a type of place that you have not listed, however no consideration is given to the order of preferred offer types listed when offers are made. Offers will be made in the following order: CSP, BMP, and FEE, with the most highly ranked applicants being offered CSP places and so on down the merit order until all vacancies are filled. It is important that applicants who are not in a position to pay for a full fee (FEE) paying place DO NOT list this type of place in their application for the University of Melbourne. Once an applicant is offered a FEE place it is not possible to swap into a CSP or BMP.
- For The University of Notre Dame Australia, Fremantle and Sydney, you must specify the types of places you wish to be considered for. You will not be considered for a place you have not selected. Offers will be made in the following order: CSP first and BMP second for Fremantle campus. CSP first, BMP second and Full-Fee third for Sydney campus.
- For The University of Queensland you may specify the types of places you wish to be considered for, however no consideration is given to preferred offer type when offers are made. Offers will be made in the order of CSP first and BMP second.
- For The University of Western Australia you may specify the types of places you wish to be considered for, however no consideration is given to preferred offer type when offers are made. Offers will be made in the following order: CSP then BMP.
- For the University of Wollongong you must specify the types of places you wish to be considered for in your preferred order. Place type allocations will be according to applicant rank and preference. You must also note your willingness to be allocated to a specific campus, responding yes/no in the application for the Shoalhaven, Wollongong, or Southern Highlands campuses. You must also specify yes/no if you wish to be considered for the Rural End-to-End Medical Education Track.
If you decline an offer of a place, you will not be considered for another place or receive another offer.
If you have been offered a place in another course or by an institution not participating in GEMSAS and you intend to accept that place, then please be considerate of fellow applicants and withdraw your application for all GEMPASS Australia courses as soon as possible.
Each university has a quota for the year's intake of domestic students (Australian citizens/permanent residents and New Zealand citizens). This includes Commonwealth supported non-bonded places (CSP) and Commonwealth supported bonded places (BMP) as well as Australian full fee places (Macquarie, Melbourne and Notre Dame only).
Most schools are obliged to fill at least 25% of all Commonwealth Supported Places with students from a rural background. Rural background sub-quotas can be filled from a combination of offer types and are not restricted to only bonded places.
Quotas for 2024 are expected to be:

BMP - Bonded Medical Program
The Bonded Medical Program (BMP) is a Federal Government initiative which aims to provide more Australian trained doctors where there are workplace shortages - particularly (but not limited to) rural and remote Australia.
Information about this scheme can be found on the Australian Government Department of Health website (https://www.health.gov.au/our-work/bonded-medical-program). The BMP is open to all first year medical students who are Australian citizens, permanent residents of Australia or Australian permanent humanitarian visa holders.
Applicants in the following categories should refer to the medical school websites, the entry requirements and Rurality sections in this Guide:
- Combined Degree applicants;
- Indigenous applicants;
- Rural resident applicants;
- Other special sub-quota applicants.
Please note documentation requirements below and ensure your supporting documentation meets them.
If you have resided in an Australian rural area, MM 2 to 7, for 5 years consecutively or 10 years cumulatively, you may be eligible for consideration in rural schemes and sub-quotas. You will need to complete the Rurality question in the Application Form and submit supporting documentation. For information about rural sub quotas or bonus points please view the schools' entry requirements pages.
The Modified Monash Model (MMM) is how the Department of Health define whether a location is a city, rural, remote or very remote. The model measures remoteness and population size on a scale of Modified Monash (MM) category MM 1 to MM 7. The Modified Monash Model (MMM) 2019 has been updated to align with the latest available census data. The model was developed to better target health workforce programs to attract health professionals to more remote and smaller communities. The MMM classifies metropolitan, regional, rural and remote areas according to geographical remoteness, as defined by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), and town size. The most recent classification (Modified Monash Model 2019), based on 2016 census data, is the one by which we will assess your rurality.
Applicants who submit fraudulent documents, or otherwise seek to gain an advantage by fraudulent means, or who engage in any misconduct during the application process may be banned from future applications through GEMSAS. The submission of incorrect or misleading information is deemed fraudulent. Actions taken in such cases may include cancellation of an application for admission, withdrawal of an offer of admission, or cancellation of an enrolment.
The Graduate Entry Medical School Admissions System (GEMSAS) will use these guidelines in the processing of Rurality Claims.
The Modified Monash Model (MMM 2019) is made up of 7 categories:
- MM 1 Metropolitan areas
- MM 2 Regional centres
- MM 3 Large rural towns
- MM 4 Medium rural towns
- MM 5 Small rural towns
- MM 6 Remote communities
- MM 7 Very remote communities
If you have resided in a MM 2 to 7 area for 5 years consecutively or 10 years cumulatively and wish to be considered for rural schemes and sub-quotas, you will need to provide documentary evidence.
The Australian Government currently defines 'Rural origin' as residency for at least 10 years cumulatively or any 5 years consecutively in a MM2-7 area.
You can check your MMM status at (select Modified Monash Model 2019): https://www.health.gov.au/resources/apps-and-tools/health-workforce-locator/health-workforce-locator
Acceptable supporting documents include:
· You, the applicant, must provide a statutory declaration in your name. If you are providing bills or invoices in a parent's name, from when you were under 18, then both a statutory declaration from a parent and one from yourself will be required. The statutory declaration/s must be accompanied by either:
1. Professional supporting letters from a GP/dentist, bank, school, university or workplace.
-
- Professional supporting letters must be dated, signed, include your rural residential address and rural address history, and the dates that you resided at the address.
- The professional supporting letters must detail how you are known to the author of the letter and you must be known in a professional capacity e.g. patient of the GP or student of the school/university.
- The GP practice/school/bank/work place/university should be in or around the same rural area you are providing support for residing in. If not, the letter needs to clearly detail how the author is able to confirm the rural address history and time periods. The professional letter of support must be official on letterhead and include, if from a GP their AHPRA registration number or official practice stamp.
OR;
2. Documents to prove residence such as invoices for telephone, utilities, or bank statements showing your (or your family's) address, can be provided.
-
- If you were over 18 at the time, bills and invoices will only be accepted if in your name.
- Rates notices are not acceptable.
- An online printed invoice will only be acceptable if dated the year it was issued. E.g. a bank statement must be dated the year you are supporting (i.e. dated 19 July 2020 if you are supporting the year 2020, it cannot be dated 2024 if you are supporting the year 2020).
The professional letters of support and statutory declarations must include the rural address history and time periods.
Please note:
- Residing is where you physically reside/live. If residing on campus this is taken into consideration and if not a campus in a rural location, it is not considered rural time and cannot be claimed as rural residing. If you do not physically live at the claimed rural location it will not be considered as rural residing, it does not matter where your family or primary residence is. We will only consider rural locations where you physically reside. Consecutive means “follow one after another without an interruption”.
Please ensure you claim and support rural locations where you have physically resided. See the Rural background document guide for more information and examples. - If you reside (physically live) more than 5 years consecutively in a rural location and prior to or after this time, reside in a non-rural location, you should not detail this non-rural time in your application nor provide documentation to support the family home where you have not physically resided. You should only claim the time you physically resided in a rural area and only provide supporting documentation for this time. Ensure the time is consecutive if consecutive has been claimed.
- If you reside (physically live) in a rural location and study via distance education, while remaining at your rural location, and this time is included in meeting the rural criteria, you must provide a letter from the university to confirm that the studies were via distance education.
- All rural residing should be included in the online application but supporting documentation only needs to support 5 years consecutive or 10 years cumulative rural residing.
- School reports are not sufficient documentation as we need to clearly see your rural residential address
- Please ensure your documentation supports 5 years consecutively or 10 years cumulatively of rural residing and includes the cover sheet you will print off when you submit your on-line application.
- You cannot claim time in the future as part of the 5 or 10 years, as there is no way to establish proof that you will continue to reside in a rural setting.
- Time spent at a holiday home (second residence) or during school holidays in a rural setting, will not be considered.
- If selecting 5 years consecutive then the supporting documentation must support 5 full years (documentation is required for every year) and must be consecutive.
- If selecting 10 years cumulative then the supporting documentation must support 10 full years and documentation will be needed for each time period, one document for the start of each time period and one for the end of each time period (documentation is required for every year).
- An official statutory declaration template must be used, either your state or territory one or a Commonwealth one. You can find these by googling statutory declaration.
Please email your supporting documentation with the Rural coversheet to
Note that the supporting documentation must be emailed no later than 5pm your time on Monday 17th June 2024.
Please read the Rural background Document Guide, found on the Documentation page in the application and on the website, to assist you to understand the expectations that GEMSAS has regarding the documentation. The guide also provides examples of acceptable wording for the statutory declaration/s and professional supporting letters.
Emailed documentation:
- must include the Rural coversheet, supporting documentation and an official statutory declaration completed by you, or it will not be assessed
- subject line should include your full name and GAMSAT ID/VTAC ID
- should only be submitted once.

Doctor of Medicine and Surgery |
The Medicinae ac Chirurgiae Doctoranda (MChD), Latin for Doctor of Medicine and Surgery, is a comprehensive and varied four year program for graduate students looking to enter the rewarding field of medicine. It aims to produce graduates who are committed to compassionate, ethical health care and the expansion of medical knowledge. The MChD is a Level 9 Extended Masters qualification as defined by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). The School of Medicine and Psychology provides our students the opportunity to gain clinical experience across many of our teaching locations, including Canberra, Sydney, rural locations in NSW, the Northern Territory, and overseas. |
||
Bachelor Degree |
Applicants must have completed a Bachelor degree or be completing the final year of a Bachelor degree at the time of application. The Bachelor degree must be an AQF Level 7 qualification (at minimum) and must be comprised of at least three full-time equivalent years (3.0 FTE) worth of study. One and two-year graduate entry Bachelor Degrees will be considered only where the applicant has previously completed an AQF Level 7 Bachelor Degree comprised of at least 3.0 FTE worth of study. Two-year accelerated Bachelor degrees (i.e. where 3.0 FTE worth of study is fast-tracked over two years) will be accepted if the degree is due to be completed by 31 December in the year of application. The ANU does not accept conversion degrees (any undergraduate qualification below 2FTE standard duration). In addition, ANU will not accept Bachelor degrees that include more than 1.0 FTE of credit from previous studies undertaken below AQF Level 7 (e.g. a Bachelor degree containing prior credit from a TAFE certificate/diploma). Bachelor degrees completed in Australia must be from a Commonwealth-accredited institution. Bachelor degrees completed overseas must be from a recognised institution and must be equivalent to an Australian Bachelor degree, as determined by the Australian Government Department of Education. The ANU School of Medicine and Psychology welcomes graduates from a variety of undergraduate backgrounds and considers all applicants equally. There is no preferred Bachelor degree or prerequisite subjects for entry to the MChD program. Applicants who have completed a higher-level qualification but do not hold a recognised Bachelor degree are not eligible for consideration. Standalone Honours, Graduate Diplomas and/or Masters by Coursework qualifications will only be accepted as ‘key degrees’ if the applicant has already completed a recognised Bachelor degree prior to undertaking the higher-level study. Applicants whose Bachelor degree was completed prior to 31st May 2014 will need to meet further study requirements to be eligible to apply. Please read the ‘Currency of Qualification’ section for more information. |
||
GPA Calculation |
The ANU School of Medicine and Psychology uses a weighted GPA calculation for admission to the MChD program. This means your most recent results are weighted more heavily:
A minimum weighted GPA of 5.0 is required to be considered for interview. The GPA calculation is based on three years of full-time equivalent study (3.0 FTE) in your most recent eligible degree (or combination of degrees, if applicable). For the purpose of the GPA calculation, eligible degrees include Bachelor, Honours, Graduate Diploma and Masters by Coursework programs. Course results from eligible degrees will be included in the GPA calculation if the degree is already completed or due to be completed by 31 December in the year of application. If your most recent eligible degree comprises less than 3.0 FTE worth of study, course results from your next-most-recent eligible degree(s) may be used to make up the remainder of the 3.0 FTE. For example, if an applicant has completed a 1 year standalone Honours degree after their Bachelor degree, their GPA would be calculated using 1.0 FTE worth of results from the Honours program (Final GPA Year) and the remaining 2.0 FTE worth of results would be taken from the last two years of the Bachelor degree (Final-1 and Final-2 GPA Years). If the duration of a degree exceeds the equivalent of 3 full-time years of study, only the courses comprising the last 3.0 FTE worth of study will be used in the GPA calculation. For example, for a 5 year combined degree, the GPA calculation will only include the last 3 years of study and will not include the first 2 years. Where an applicant is completing the final year of their degree in 2024, the current year of study will only be included in the GPA calculation if at least 0.375 FTE worth of graded course results in the Final GPA year are available to be used in the calculation. If at least 0.375 FTE worth of graded results are not yet available, the Final GPA Year will be excluded from the calculation and the GPA will be calculated using only the Final-1 (x2) and Final-2 (x1) GPA Years. Ungraded Pass (UGP/CRS) results will not be included in the GPA calculation. We will include UGP passes in the ‘credit count’ for a particular GPA year, however, they are excluded from the calculation and that particular GPA year will be calculated based on the available graded course results only. An applicant must have a minimum of 0.375 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) worth of graded results available for a GPA to be calculated for that particular GPA year, i.e.: if 1.0FTE is the equivalent of 8 courses (or 48 credits with 6 credits per course), then using this module, you must have a minimum of 3 courses (0.375 FTE) that are graded (not UGP/CRS) for that year. It is important to note that as a minimum an applicant must have at least 0.375 FTE of graded results in at least 2 of the 3 GPA years to have a valid GPA calculated. Graduate Certificates, Masters by Research, PhDs, non-award study and study completed below AQF Level 7 will not be included in the GPA calculation. However, credit awarded towards a completed postgraduate diploma or Masters by Coursework may be considered in the GPA calculation. Completion of some higher-level qualifications may attract a percentage bonus. Please refer to the ‘Bonuses’ section for further information. |
||
Currency of qualification |
Applicants are required to have completed their Bachelor degree within 10 years of the date of application. The 10 years is measured from the date your degree was officially completed (i.e. the date of conferral), not the date of your graduation ceremony. If your Bachelor degree was completed more than 10 years ago, the '10 year rule' may be waived if you have undertaken additional undergraduate or postgraduate study in the intervening period. This must be evidenced by successful completion of at least 0.5 years of full-time equivalent study (0.5 FTE) in a Commonwealth-accredited program at Bachelor level or higher (as defined by the Australian Qualifications Framework) in the 10 years prior to the date of application. A study load of 0.5 FTE is usually equivalent to one semester of full-time study or two semesters of part-time study. |
||
GAMSAT |
Applicants must have achieved a minimum score of 50 in each section of the GAMSAT and a minimum Overall Score of 50 to be considered for an interview. |
||
Bonuses |
Honours: A percentage bonus of 2% may be awarded for a standalone Honours degree if the qualification is already complete or due to be completed in the year of application. The bonus applies to standalone Honours degrees only. Embedded and Professional Honours programs are included in the GPA calculation but do not receive the percentage bonus. Masters by Research or PhD: A percentage bonus may be awarded for a Masters by Research (2%) or PhD (4%) if the qualification is completed prior to the date of application. The percentage bonus is applied to the combined GPA/GAMSAT score. Applicants must meet the individual GPA and GAMSAT minimum requirements before they can be eligible for a bonus. Applicants cannot accumulate additional bonuses for completing more than one of the degrees listed above. If an applicant has completed more than one qualification that is eligible for a bonus, only the highest bonus will apply. |
||
Indigenous Applicants |
The ANU School of Medicine and Psychology encourages applications from people of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander background and has a dedicated Indigenous entry pathway for the MChD program. Each year, there are reserved places in the MChD through the Indigenous entry pathway. Applicants from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent can apply directly to the ANU by completing the application process as outlined on the ANU website: https://health.anu.edu.au/study/doctor-medicine-and-surgery or applicants can apply through GEMSAS. All applicants must complete the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Declaration Form. The declaration form can be found at https://health.anu.edu.au/files/Aboriginal%20and%20Torres%20Strait%20Islander%20Declaration%20Form.pdf All Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students who are admitted into the MChD program are automatically considered for a scholarship. |
||
Rural entry |
In line with Federal Government initiatives, the ANU School of Medicine and Psychology offers 29% of its domestic places to students from a rural background. GEMSAS will use the Modified Monash Model (MMM) system to determine if applicants meet the rural background criteria. If your primary place of residence has been in an Australian rural area (MM2 to 7) for 5 years consecutively or 10 years cumulatively, you may be eligible for consideration in the rural sub-quota. You can check the MMM classification of your address by visiting the Department of Health's online Health Workforce Locator. To be considered in the rural sub-quota, applicants must answer the Rurality question when completing their GEMSAS application and must provide supporting documentation to GEMSAS. |
||
Interview |
Applicants are ranked for interview consideration based on a composite score derived from the standardised weighted GPA and standardised Overall GAMSAT score, using a 50/50 weighting. |
||
Offers |
Offers of a place in the program will be based on a total combined score derived from the interview score (weighted 50%) and the composite GPA/GAMSAT score used for the interview ranking (weighted 50%). Meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee admission into the program. An offer made to an applicant who is studying the final year of their key degree in 2024 will be conditional on the successful completion of the degree. Evidence of successful completion must be received by GEMSAS no later than 31 December 2024. Applicants must meet the minimum weighted GPA threshold of 5.0 upon completion. All students offered a place at the ANU Medical School are required to meet the mandatory screening and vaccination requirements for the ANU, ACT Health, NSW Health and other clinical placement providers. Students who receive an offer of place to the MChD program will receive the screening and vaccination booklet with their offer letter. All requirements included in the booklet must be completed and evidence provided prior to commencement of the program. |
||
Deferral |
An offer of a place is only valid for the year in which it is offered. The ANU School of Medicine and Psychology will not consider deferral of enrolment for students. |
||
Conjoint MChD/PhD |
The ANU School of Medicine and Psychology offers the opportunity for high achieving students to undertake a conjoint Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (MChD) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) conjoint program. This program caters for students who have a desire to enter the medical profession but also possess a keen interest in cutting-edge research. The conjoint program is available for students who qualify for entry to a PhD program (H1 Honours or equivalent) and who achieve a higher level performance in the Advanced Research Project course and/or subject to the approval of the Director of the School of Medicine and Psychology. Applications and selection for the conjoint program is completed during the second year of the MChD program, therefore no application is required prior to starting the program. |

Qualifying degree/ GPA |
Qualifying degree Applicants are considered on academic performance in an approved Bachelor, Honours, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Master’s by coursework with a minimum weighted GPA of 5.0. The minimum entry requirement is:
The completed qualifying degree must be from an Australian University or a Higher Education Institution recognised by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), or equivalent as deemed by Deakin University. Deakin recognises up to one year (1FTE) of credit, from below AQF Level 7 study, towards the completion of an undergraduate degree. Deakin does not recognise 2-year bachelor degrees (accelerated degrees (3FTE) completed over 2 years, however, are accepted). Any credit from an International Baccalaureate will also not be accepted. GPA
Note: A GPA year must have at least 0.25FTE of graded results. Early exit from a combined degree Applicants will meet Deakin University's admission requirement if they have completed 3FTE when taking an early exit from a combined degree. If the applicant takes an early exit from the combined degree, the GPA will be recalculated and if applicable, made a conditional offer of a place. This is dependent on the successful completion and evidence via an official transcript for the single degree. Submission of documentation to the University after the closing date for the purpose of assessing qualifications will not be accepted. All documentation must be submitted with the application. |
|||||||
Currency of qualification |
General stream and Rural Training Stream Tier 2 and 3 applicants are required to have completed their qualifying degree within 10 years of their projected commencement date. The Deakin Rural Training Stream (RTS) is part of Deakin’s commitment to address health workforce needs, and to advance the health and wellbeing of regional, rural, remote, Indigenous and marginalised individuals and communities. As such, the RTS is designed to both improve access to medical training for students from rural communities in the Barwon South West Health Region (with a focus on applicants residing locally to their allocated Rural Learning Campus and/or allocated Rural Clinical School throughout their course), and provide the opportunity to complete all four years of the MD course within a rural location. In line with the above, applicants to the RTS program should be aware of the following:
Entry requirements In addition to the entry requirements above, applicants to the RTS will be considered on the basis of their rural background and ranked according to a tiered priority system (please visit https://www.deakin.edu.au/medicine/study-opportunities/rural-training-stream for further information on how this Stream operates). Applicants meeting the eligibility criteria for Tier 1 will have the following admission requirements waived:

They will be ranked in accordance with the Rural Training Stream criteria. Applicants meeting the eligibility criteria for Tier 2 and Tier 3 can apply for the Rural Training Stream by placing Deakin as their first preference. A valid GAMSAT and meeting the 10-year rule is a requirement. Applicants who decline their offer of a place in the Rural Training Stream will not be considered for a place in the Deakin General Stream. Written Application Rural Training Stream applicants are required to submit a written application (1000-character limit for each section) demonstrating:
The written application contributes 50% to the aggregate score for interview ranking and 25% for course offer ranking. Rural Training Commitment Acceptance of a place in the Rural Training Stream will require written commitment to completing all four years of the MD course at a rural training site allocated by the School. Students are expected to reside locally to their allocated Rural Learning Campus and/or Rural Clinical School throughout their course.

Bachelor Degree - Griffith recognises that some students may undertake other pathways from the standard 3 year and 4 year bachelor degrees, including completed standalone Honours and embedded Honours
Postgraduate Key Degrees - Combined Bachelor/Masters degrees: All program requirements must be completed by 31 July in the year of application for the qualification to be accepted for admissions purposes (i.e. if you cannot complete the program by mid-year you will not be eligible for admission). This qualification must have a minimum length of three years FTE, and the GPA will be calculated using the final three years of the combined degree. - Combined Bachelor/Postgraduate Diplomas degrees: All program requirements must be completed by 31 July in the year of application for the qualification to be accepted for admissions purposes. Griffith does not accept Postgraduate Diplomas as a Key Degree. In determining the GPA, the Postgraduate Diploma component will be ignored and the GPA calculated from the undergraduate component alone, provided that the applicant has three full-time years of undergraduate study. - Masters by Research Only and Masters by Coursework, or a combination of coursework and research, must be completed by 31 July in the year of application - PhDs must be completed by 31 July in the year of application Diplomas, Postgraduate Diplomas, Graduate Certificates and Graduate Diplomas are not considered a key degree and are not considered in the GPA calculation. Exception: credit awarded towards a completed Masters degree from a Postgraduate Diploma, Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma can be considered in the GPA calculation, up to the amount of credit awarded towards the Masters degree. |
|||||||||||||||||
GPA Calculation |
Griffith University uses an unweighted GPA calculation for admission to the Doctor of Medicine. - For a Bachelor degree, the GPA will be calculated using the GEMSAS grading schema and will be calculated over the final three years of full-time study. Applicants who are in the final year of a Bachelor degree at the time of application will have a GPA calculated over all grades available to date. - In any one GPA Year, ungraded passes to a maximum of 0.5 FTE will be disregarded. Ungraded passes in excess of 0.5 FTE will be included in the GPA calculation for the GPA Year at a grade value 4.5. Due to COVID-19 applicants for admission in 2025 will have any study completed in Semester/Trimester 1 2020 assessed as follows:
Requests to have Semester/Trimester 1 2020 grades disregarded must be sent to Late requests and multiple requests will not be entertained. - The GPA for a completed standalone Honours degree will have a final year GPA based on the classification awarded (as per the conversion table in this guide) or subject results and best GPA used. The balance of the GPA calculation will be based on the final two years of the Bachelor degree. - For an embedded Honours degree, the GPA will be calculated using the final year subject results or the classification awarded (if completed) and the best GPA used. The balance of the GPA will be based on the 3rd and 2nd years of subject results. - For a completed Professional Honours qualification, please contact Griffith University ( - For a completed Combined Bachelor/Masters degree, the GPA will be calculated using the final three years of the combined degree. This qualification must have a minimum length of three years full time equivalent (FTE) study. - For a completed Combined Bachelor/Postgraduate Diplomas degree, the GPA will be calculated from the undergraduate component alone. We do not accept Postgraduate Diplomas as a Key Degree therefore the Postgraduate Diploma component will be ignored in the GPA calculation, provided there is three full-time years of undergraduate study. - Completed Masters by Research (where the degree is entirely non-graded) will receive a GPA of 7.0 for the duration of equivalent full-time study (up to a maximum of two years). The balance of the GPA calculation will be based on the final one or two years of the next most recently completed key degree. - Completed Masters by Research (where there are graded components) will receive a GPA of 7.0 for the duration of ethe Research component (up to a maximum of two years), with the balance of the GPA calculation being based on the graded units within the Research qualification and the next most recently completed key degree/s. - Completed Masters by Coursework, (coursework only or a combination of coursework and research), will have a GPA calculated from the graded components of the program for the duration of equivalent full-time years of study in the program with the balance of the GPA calculation being based on the final one or two years of the next most recently completed key degree. - Completed PhDs receive an overall GPA of 7.0. |
|||||||||||||||||
Currency of qualification |
The key degree must have been completed within 10 years of the projected commencement date. The year of completion is the year the applicant completed all academic requirements for the qualification, and approval is given for the award to be granted. Applicants whose key degree was completed outside the 10-year period are considered for admission if they have completed by 31 July, with a passing GPA, the equivalent of 1 year’s full time tertiary level studies within the past 10 years. This study does not need to be a completed program of study as long as the duration is equivalent to one year or more full-time study by 31 July in the year of application. At a minimum, all applicants must have successfully completed at least 1 year FTE of actual tertiary study at Diploma level or higher within 10 years of the projected commencement date of the Doctor of Medicine. Credit gained from informal and non-formal learning (including work experience) does not count towards the 1-year FTE of actual tertiary study. |

Entry is competitive and a GPA required for interview selection is likely to be significantly higher than 5.0 out of 7.0. A high GAMSAT can offset a slightly lower GPA and vice versa. As a result of using a 50:50 GPA/GAMSAT selections methodology, there is no discrete cut-off point for GAMSAT. Bachelor Degree/ GPA/ GAMSAT |
A minimum GPA of 5 and a minimum GAMSAT Score of 50 in each of the three sections of the GAMSAT is required. These are minimum requirements only, and selection into the course is highly competitive. The Grade Point Average (GPA) is measured by considering the last 3 years of the applicant's undergraduate coursework studies (only including Honours where the Honours Degree is completed by mid-year in the year of application, and the results are available for selection). GPA years will be weighted: the final-minus-2 x 1, the final-minus-1 x 2 and the final x 2. If an Honours degree is not completed by mid-year in the year of application, then GPA weightings will be applied by weighting the final three pre-honours undergraduate years, as outlined above. An undergraduate degree is defined as a degree of at least three years duration when studied full-time, or equivalent, from a recognised university. However, accelerated entry and conversion degrees may be accepted, depending on the level and extent of credited study, at the discretion of the selection committee. Re-ranking may be undertaken in the applicant’s favour for a small number of applicants with a high level of performance in a PhD or Master qualification (completed within 10 years of the commencement date for the MD) in a cognate discipline (strict quotas apply). Please note that results for 2020 subjects completed before the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e. January 2020 to March 2020) will be included in entry score calculations (All Entry Pathways). Results for honours completed in 2020 will be included in entry score calculations for 2022 and all future intakes (Excluded for Guaranteed Entry Pathway). Please note Honours results are not included in WAM calculations for the Guaranteed Entry Pathway. All other 2020 subject results (i.e. completed from April 2020 to December 2020) will be excluded from entry score calculations for 2022 and all future intakes (All Entry Pathways). For the avoidance of doubt, subjects from all other study periods will be included in entry score calculations (All Entry Pathways). The above relates to all pathways, including the standard pathway and Indigenous pathway that use GPA for entry and the Guaranteed Entry pathway which uses WAM for entry. |
||

Applicants who do not meet this requirement may be deemed ineligible. Applicants in the Final Year of the Qualifying Degree Applicants who are enrolled in the final year of a three-year FTE undergraduate degree must complete all requirements of the degree successfully, including any Study Abroad components, as at 31 December 2024. Qualifying Bachelor Degree |
Applicants must have completed, or be in the final year of, a minimum three-year FTE undergraduate degree. Applicants who do not have a three-year FTE undergraduate degree, but who have, via multiple complete qualification, achieved a total of three years’ study at AQF Level 7 or higher may also be eligible, subject to the conditions stated below. Vertical Double/ Combined Degrees An undergraduate / postgraduate combined degree – consisting of at least two undergraduate years plus at least one postgraduate year – must be complete by 31 December 2024. Completion of the undergraduate component alone will be deemed insufficient, unless the applicant has been approved by the conferring institution to exit the qualification early with a three-year FTE degree. Accelerated Degrees An accelerated degree consists of three trimesters per year completed in two years. Applicants in the final year of an accelerated degree must be due to complete the degree by 31 December 2024. Conversion Degrees A conversion degree will be eligible as a qualifying degree if it is preceded by a relevant diploma or succeeded by a completed minimum one-year FTE postgraduate degree in a related discipline or field. Prior Credit towards Qualifying Bachelor's Degree Applicants who have completed a three-year FTE Bachelor’s degree, but have been awarded credit for prior academic learning, are generally required to have completed at least two years of full-time study within their awarding institution. We also recognise up to one year of prior credit, from below AQF Level 7 study, towards the completion of an undergraduate degree. As the MD program commences in early 2025, an extension cannot be granted in any circumstances. Where deferred or supplementary exams are scheduled after 31 December 2024, the applicant will be deemed not to have completed all requirements of the degree as at 31 December 2024. As such, applicants must note the stipulated deadlines carefully if and when requesting deferred or supplementary exams. Where an applicant is in the third year of a three-year FTE degree, the final-year GPA will be calculated from the grades available at the time of assessment. Results for Semester One, 2024, must be available by 31 July 2024 to be used in the GPA calculation for interview ranking. Some institutions changed their grading system to pass / fail for Semester One, 2020 or for the whole of 2020. These qualifications will still be accepted, provided they remain a minimum three-year FTE undergraduate degree, or other accepted qualifying degree. Offers to candidates completing their degree in 2024 will be conditional upon maintenance of a competitive GPA and documentary evidence to GEMSAS of degree completion prior to 31 December 2024. Where relevant, this documentary evidence includes results from all Study Abroad components of their degree. As such, applicants must note their international institution’s timeframe for supplying results. |
||
GPA Calculation |
An applicant’s GPA will, subject to the exclusions below, be calculated on the most recent three years FTE of study of completed / completing degrees at AQF Level 7 or above. All grades / results (including fail grades, if applicable) from the most recent three years FTE of completed / completing study will be used. GPAs will be calculated using Bachelor, Honours, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, and Masters by coursework degrees only. Eligible postgraduate qualifications must be complete by 31 July 2024 to be used in the GPA calculation. Not-for-Degree and single-unit study that is not credited to a degree will be included if it is completed at a minimum AQF Level 7 at a TEQSA-accredited institution. Masters by research, Doctoral degrees, and study below Bachelor AQF Level 7 will not be used in the GPA calculation. Domestic qualifications must be completed at a TEQSA-accredited institution. International qualifications must be deemed comparable by the Australian Department of Education (DE) (previously AEI-NOOSR). GPA years will be progressively weighted Final-minus-2 x 1, Final-minus-1 x 2 and Final x 3, to give greatest weight to the most recent results. For more information regarding GPA calculations and this terminology please refer to the GPA Guides on the GEMSAS Website: http://www.gemsas.edu.au/gpa-calculations/ Masters by Research or Doctoral degrees, classified by the host institution as Course Complete (or equivalent) by 31 July 2024, will be awarded bonus points. These qualifications will not be used for GPA calculations. |

Bachelor Degree/ GPA |
The first key degree must be a Bachelor level degree (minimum 3 years full-time study). After the completion of an acceptable first key degree, a subsequent key degree can be undertaken which may include a new Bachelor degree, Honours degree, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters, or Doctoral degree. Where multiple key degrees have been completed, the most recently completed key degree will be used as the basis of the GPA assessment. A subsequent key degree can be a new bachelor level degree, or an approved Honours, Graduate Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters, or Doctoral degree after completion of an acceptable first Bachelor degree. Where multiple key degrees have been completed, the most recently completed key degree will be used as the basis of the GPA assessment. Applicants must have achieved a UQ equivalent GPA of 5.0/7.0 or above in the designated key degree. PLEASE NOTE: Competitive applicants with a GEMSAS GPA of between 5.0/7.0 and 5.75/7.0 will be reviewed to determine equivalency to the UQ GPA assessment method as outlined in the University Policy and Procedure (PPL) 3.40.06 Undergraduate, Doctor of Medicine, Non-Award and CSP Admissions. There will be no variation to the GPA assessment methodology for periods of study that were affected by COVID-19. A new key degree must be completed at the end of Semester 1 in the year of application to be included in the assessment. Current study assessments are only available for applicants who are currently completing their first key degree. Qualifications must be an AQF Level 7 or above to be considered as a key degree. Grades will only be included in the GPA assessment for subjects contributing to the completion of the key degree. The GPA for the UQ preference is calculated over the entire duration of the degree. All subjects studied while enrolled in the key degree are included in the GPA calculation, regardless of whether they counted towards the award of the degree. Any other study for which credit was given towards the degree must also be included, this includes failed attempts at subjects in earlier degrees that were repeated and passed to attain credit in the new degree. Where the degree was completed as part of a combined, dual, or parallel degree, all subjects studied towards both degrees are included in the calculation of the GPA. This includes dual Bachelor/Master degrees that have an integrated delivery of content. UQ’s GPA assessments are weighted by credit value of the subjects rather than the year in which the subjects were completed. Letter grades are used in all GPA calculations by UQ. Percentages are only used when equivalent letter grades are unavailable. Applicants are advised not to include a UQ preference if in the year of application their first key degree cannot be completed with a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0 by 31 December. |
|
Current study assessments |
UQ will only consider a current study assessment if: 1. The applicant is currently completing their first key degree, and 2. The applicant is in their final year of study in the first key degree, and 3. The progressive GPA of the first key degree is above 5.0, and 4. The first key degree is expected to be completed before 31 December in the year of application. A conditional offer made based on a current study assessment will be withdrawn if either the minimum overall GPA of 5.0 is not achieved or the first key degree is not completed by 31 December in the year of application. |
|
Currency of qualification |
If an applicant’s key degree was completed more than 10 years prior to the proposed commencement date, it will not be accepted for admission unless the applicant has completed at least half (0.50) a full-time equivalent year (FTE) of subsequent coursework study (at bachelor level or higher) with a UQ equivalent GPA 5.00/7.00. This additional period of study must have been completed in the 10 years preceding commencement of the MD. Any credit received from prior studies or work experience will not contribute to the 0.50 FTE requirement or the assessed GPA. The grades from these additional studies will not be included in the key degree’s GPA assessment. |
|
GAMSAT |
Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 50 in each section. Applicants with any section score below 50 are deemed ineligible. UQ uses an unweighted GAMSAT score (an average of the three sections rounded to six decimal places). |
|
Prerequisite subjects and equivalents |
Applicants require two science prerequisites in cell and tissue biology, and systems physiology completed at second year undergraduate level. Prerequisite subjects must be completed within 10 years of commencing the Doctor of Medicine program (i.e., commencing in 2025, the prerequisite subjects are accepted if they were completed from 2015 onwards. Approved prerequisite equivalent subjects information is available here. If your subject prerequisite course/s are not listed on our website, you must apply for an assessment to be conducted by the University of Queensland. Submit your documentation to UQ by 1 May in the year of application. Requests for prerequisite assessments take approximately 4 to 6 weeks. IMPORTANT: Applicants who have not submitted documentation for assessment by the due date (1 May) will be deemed to have failed the prerequisite requirements and will not be eligible for selection into the MD. At the time of application, if you have not completed the prerequisite subjects or equivalent you must enrol in these subjects by the end of July (in the year of application), and list them in the Education section of the GEMSAS Online Application Form or by advising GEMSAS ( For those enrolling in prerequisite subjects in 2024, the results must be available by Tuesday 31 December 2024. Note: Applicants planning on taking an early exit or alternative award should check that the early exit or alternative award will still meet the required prerequisites. |
|
Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Applicants |
Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants can submit their application directly to UQ’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit, information about the process is here. Sitting the GAMSAT is not compulsory for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants at UQ. However, it is recommended that applicants who choose to undertake the GAMSAT apply through GEMSAS and include UQ as a preference, in addition to submitting a direct entry application to UQ. |

Bachelor Degree/ GPA |
In order to be eligible for entry, applicants must have completed a recognised* bachelor degree, or will complete a recognised* bachelor degree by the end of the application year. Applicants who only hold higher degrees As all applicants require a recognised* bachelor degree for entry to the UWA MD course, applicants who have completed a higher degree but have not completed a recognised* bachelor degree will not be eligible for consideration. GPA Domestic applicants who were successful in obtaining an interview for 2024 entry averaged GPA of 6.79. Study included in the GPA calculation: Applicants must have achieved a GPA of at least 5.5 at time of interview selection. The GPA is calculated on the most recent three full-time-equivalent years (FTE) of study (e.g. 3 FTE is 144 credit points at UWA). Please note this excludes any exemptions, credit or advanced standing. UWA includes Bachelor, Honours year (only if already completed or if it will be completed by end of semester one, 2024), Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, and Masters by coursework level of study in the GPA calculation if undertaken in the most recent three years FTE. Additional study (other than honours) does not need to be completed. Applicants who have undertaken additional study (whether postgraduate or additional undergraduate study) should indicate this on the GEMSAS application. Unweighted GPA: The GPA for UWA is not weighted. To calculate an unweighted GPA you simply need to add the three GPA years (final GPA year, final GPA year-1 and final GPA year -2) together and divide by three. If you only have two years of results at the time you calculate your GPA you would add the two GPA years together and divide by 2. Further GPA Complications: Please see our website for information on how we deal with the following complications to a GPA calculation:
Minimal results in the current year of study: Where an applicant has 0.25 FTE (or less) of graded results for their final GPA year at the end of semester 1, 2024, Admissions will include older study, where available. Where no older study is available, Admissions will calculate the GPA on only the “GPA Final-1” and “GPA Final-2” years and will calculate over 1FTE to include all results. For example if an applicant has a total of 2.125 FTE studies, one of the GPA years will be calculated from 1.125 FTE. In this instance, if an applicant is made an offer, it will be conditional upon their performance in all units in 2024 (see section below about conditional offers). Applicants with completed PhDs: Applicants who have completed a PhD (from a recognised Institution) by the time of application will be awarded/deemed a GPA of 7.0. Applicants with completed Doctor of Dental Medicine from UWA: Applicants who have completed a Doctor of Dental Medicine from UWA by the time of application will be awarded/deemed a GPA of 7.0. Applicants with completed Masters by Research: Completed Masters by research qualifications are not included in the GPA calculation. Instead Admissions will add a small bonus of 0.2 to the overall GPA for applicants who have completed this qualification by 31 July. Degree Completion and semester two, 2024 results - Conditional Offers: Applicants who are eligible for a course offer and have not completed their first bachelor degree by semester 1, 2024 will be made a conditional offer requiring them to achieve a minimum GPA of 5.5 in the final semester. Please note that if you are completing your initial bachelor degree and undertake a course of action that will result in you receiving late results, you may not meet offer conditions by the required deadline (i.e. 31 December 2024) which will result in your offer being withdrawn. Therefore take care when undertaking any course of action in semester 2, 2024 that could delay your results or degree completion. This may include undertaking deferred/supplementary exams, undertaking units that fall outside normal semesters (e.g. summer units or trimester units) or going on exchange. If you anticipate any problems, please contact the Admissions Team as soon as possible to determine whether your offer will be withdrawn. Accelerated degrees and conversion courses: UWA will accept 2-year bachelor degrees and 1-year conversion degrees for the purposes of admission to our medical course. However, applicants undertaking a 1-year conversion degree who have not completed a previous bachelor degree must complete that course before applying for entry to UWA (i.e. applicants cannot apply during the conversion course). ____________ *The completed undergraduate degree must be from an Australian university or a Higher Education Institution recognised by the Australian Qualifications Framework, or a recognised Bachelor qualification listed by the Department of Education (DE). |
|||||||||||||||||
Currency of qualification |
There is no 10-year rule for entry to UWA which means that we will consider applicants with degrees older than 10 years. |
|||||||||||||||||
GAMSAT |
Applicants must obtain a minimum overall score of 55 with no individual section score below 50. Domestic applicants who were successful in gaining an interview for 2024 entry averaged a GAMSAT score of 68.83. |
|||||||||||||||||
Indigenous Applicants |
UWA encourages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to consider applying for entry into the MD. In addition to the pathways listed here, there are alternative pathways available for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants. These are available through the Centre for Aboriginal Medical and Dental Health (see www.uwa.edu.au/facilities/centre-for-aboriginal-medical-and-dental-health for further details). |
|||||||||||||||||
Rural |
Applicants must meet eligibility requirements in order to apply for the Rural Pathway. Applicants, who wish to apply for the Rural Pathway, must complete the relevant questions in the application form and submit supporting documentation to GEMSAS by 17 June 2024 in order to prove their eligibility for the pathway. |
|||||||||||||||||

Admission criteria | Admission to the UOW MD degree for domestic applicants via the General Entry Pathway (non-rural applicants) and the Rural Entry Pathway (rural applicants) is based on:
|
||
Grade Point Average and degree requirements |
For 2025 entry, GPA scores will be used as a qualifying hurdle for interview offers. GPA scores will not be used in ranking for interview or place offers once the hurdle has been met. Applicants must have a weighted GPA of greater than 5.5 on a 7-point scale at the time of being selected for interview to be eligible to apply. All applicants must have completed (or be in their final year of study at time of application) an undergraduate degree at AQF7 or above consisting of at least three years duration when studied full-time, or equivalent (FTE). To be classed as a valid qualifying degree, the undergraduate degree must be from an Australian university or an equivalent overseas Bachelor qualification from an institution that is recognised under the framework and guidelines set by the Australian Department of Education (DE) (previously AEI-NOOSR). All valid qualifying degrees need to be completed by 31st December 2024. A weighted GPA calculation is used for admission to the MD program. This means most recent results are weighted more heavily:
The GPA calculation is based on three years of full-time equivalent study (3.0 FTE) in the most recent eligible degree (or combination of degrees, if applicable). For the purpose of the GPA calculation, eligible degrees include Bachelor, Honours, Graduate Diploma and Master by Coursework programs. Course results from eligible degrees will be included in the GPA calculation if the degree is already completed or due to be completed by 31 December in the year of application. If the most recent eligible degree comprises less than 3.0 FTE worth of study, course results from the next-most-recent eligible degree(s) may be used to make up the remainder of the 3.0 FTE. For example, if an applicant has completed a 1-year standalone Honours degree after their Bachelor degree, their GPA would be calculated using 1.0 FTE worth of results from the Honours program (Final GPA Year) and the remaining 2.0 FTE worth of results would be taken from the last two years of the Bachelor degree (Final-1 and Final-2 GPA Years). If the duration of a degree exceeds the equivalent of 3 full-time years of study, only the courses comprising the last 3.0 FTE worth of study will be used in the GPA calculation. For example, for a 5-year combined degree, the GPA calculation will only include the last 3 years of study and will not include the first 2 years. Where an applicant is completing the final year of their degree in 2024, the current year of study will only be included in the GPA calculation if at least 0.375 FTE worth of graded course results from Semester/Trimester 1 2024 are available to be used in the calculation. UOW will include UGP in the ‘credit count’ for a particular GPA year, however, these are excluded from the calculation and that particular GPA ‘year’ will be calculated based on the available graded course results only. An applicant must have a minimum of 0.375 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) worth of graded results available for a GPA to be calculated for that particular GPA ‘year’, i.e.: if 1.0FTE is the equivalent of 8 courses (or 48 credits with 6 credits per course), then using this module, an applicant must have a minimum of 3 courses (0.375 FTE) that are graded (not UGP/CRS) for that year. Please note Graduate Certificates, Masters by Research, PhDs, non-award study and study completed below AQF Level 7 will not be included in the GPA calculation. Exception: credit awarded towards a completed Postgraduate Diploma or Masters degree from a Graduate Certificate can be considered in the GPA calculation, up to the amount of credit awarded towards the Postgraduate Diploma/Masters degree. Previous medical study Applicants who have completed medical studies in another country or qualified physicians are not considered eligible for entry to the UOW MD program. Applicants who have incomplete medical studies previously in Australia or overseas are not eligible for entry to the UOW MD program. Duration of qualification UOW does not normally recognise two-year Bachelor degrees or one year conversion degrees as valid qualifying degrees for the purposes of entry to the Doctor of Medicine program. Graduate entry two-year programs, or applicants who have completed the equivalent of a three-year FTE Bachelor degree but have been awarded credit for prior academic learning may be exempt from this rule. Please contact UOW GSM for more information if degree is less than three years FTE in duration. Accelerated Bachelor degrees are accepted as valid qualifying degrees by UOW; that is, a degree consisting of three full time equivalent trimesters per year for two years from a recognised institution. Currency of qualification Applicants are required to have graduated from their undergraduate degree within ten years of the closing date of applications for their degree to be considered a valid qualifying degree. Applicants whose undergraduate degree was completed outside the ten-year period may still be considered for admission if they have successfully completed the equivalent of one year full-time tertiary study at Graduate Diploma level or higher at a recognised university within the last ten years. If no postgraduate study has been completed in the last ten years, applicants can apply for a waiver of this rule if they can demonstrate through other activities that they hold current high level academic skills. To request a waiver, applicants need to provide a copy of their university transcripts, Curriculum Vitae (CV), and any other documentation in support of their request to Applicants who are required to be assessed for currency of qualification due to the ten-year rule will be deemed ineligible for consideration of an interview and place at UOW for 2025 entry if:
It is the responsibility of the applicant to submit a waiver request. Late submissions of a waiver request are not accepted. |
||
GAMSAT |
For 2025 entry, GAMSAT score will be used as a qualifying hurdle for interview offers. GAMSAT score will not be used in ranking for interview or place offers once the hurdle has been met. Domestic applicants need a minimum score of 50 overall, with no individual section score below 50, in the Graduate Australian Medical Schools Admission Test (GAMSAT). No other entrance examination is accepted for domestic applicants. |
||
Casper |
For 2025 entry, Casper scores are combined with UOW MD Admissions bonuses to rank for interview offers. A minimum eligible Casper score is set annually, reflecting the application cohort. Casper is a standardised, online assessment of non-cognitive skills, interpersonal characteristics, and personal qualities that are important for success as a medical student and as a future medical practitioner. As an online situational judgement test, Casper is designed to assess areas such as ethics, empathy, and communication. Applicants must complete the Casper test during the testing periods identified for UOW MD applicants. Applicants without a valid Casper score are not eligible for entry to the MD program, regardless of their competitiveness against other entry criteria. Casper testing dates for UOW MD domestic applicants for the 2024-2025 admissions cycle are:
It is recommended that applicants register to take the test on the first available date in case of emergencies or technical difficulties. Applicants without a Casper score will not be considered. For more information on Casper including practice test content, technical requirements, fees, and registration see the Acuity Insights website. |
||
UOW Admissions Bonuses |
UOW MD Admissions bonuses have been designed to reflect the principles underlying MD program admissions. For 2025 entry, Admissions bonuses are combined with Casper score to rank for interview offers, and combined with interview score to rank for place offers. All bonuses are weighted equally, bonuses are cumulative, and applicants may apply for as many bonuses as they are eligible. More information on the bonuses and application process can be found on the UOW Doctor of Medicine website The following text outlines the principles for MD program admissions, the Bonus to meet that end, and the evidence required from the applicant to demonstrate eligibility for that bonus. Bonus 1 – Underlying principle: UOW has a commitment to the local communities in which it is located.
Bonus 2 – Underlying principle: UOW has a commitment to health service provision for rural NSW.
Bonus 3 – Underlying principle: UOW welcomes applicants who believe the MD program at UOW offers the very best in medical education.
Bonus 4 – Underlying principle: UOW is committed to rural medical education and believes that applicants working in rural locations have a strong connection to rural communities and that these applicants are more likely to practice in rural locations.
Bonus 5 – Underlying principle: UOW believes in interprofessional education and that applicants who already have a degree in a health profession are likely to become doctors who work well in multi-disciplinary teams.
Bonus 6 – Underlying principle: UOW believes that applicants who have shown a sustained commitment in work environments have qualities of persistence, accountability, and professionalism that provide a good foundation for the study of medicine and a career in medicine.
Bonus 7 – Underlying principle: UOW believes that applicants who have shown a sustained commitment to service and demonstrate qualities of persistence, accountability, and professionalism are likely to succeed in medicine.
Bonus 8 – Underlying principle: UOW believes in the quality of UOW graduates and has a commitment to those graduates whether they come from pre-medicine, engineering, arts or any other UOW degree.
Bonus 9 – Underlying principle: Additionally, UOW recognises local academic excellence.
Bonus 10 – Underlying principle: UOW believes that applicants who were educated at a rural high school have a strong connection to rural communities and that these applicants are more likely to return to rural locations. UOW also wishes to mitigate inequality of educational opportunities.
Applicants wishing to apply for ANY admissions bonus must complete the UOW MD Admissions Bonus Form, even if no additional documentary evidence is required. The UOW MD Admissions Bonus Form will be available, along with electronic uploading of documents, when GEMSAS applications open on 1 May 2024. The Bonus Form must be completed, and all documentary evidence uploaded, by 11:59 PM on the 17 June 2024. Please refer to the UOW Doctor of Medicine website for links to the Admissions bonus form, and for further instructions regarding certification of evidence requirements for UOW MD Admissions bonuses. Bonuses will not be granted if:
In these circumstances the GEMSAS application will continue to be assessed, however without the addition of any UOW admissions bonuses. |
||
Admissions Interview |
Applicants who meet the qualifying threshold hurdles for GPA and GAMSAT performance are ranked for interview using an algorithm of 50% Casper score and 50% UOW MD Admissions bonuses. For 2025 entry, domestic interviews will be conducted in an online multiple-mini-interview (MMI) format in the week commencing 23 September 2024. Interviewees are assessed on areas such as communication skills, empathetic and ethical approach, reflective manner, teamwork, and decision-making skills. Further information about the interview process will be forwarded in early September to applicants who receive an interview offer. |
||
Offers |
The UOW MD admissions interview score is combined with the UOW MD Admissions bonuses to rank applicants for place offers in an algorithm of 70% interview score and 30% admissions bonuses. If an applicant has been interviewed at another GEMSAS school, their interview score will be standardised and used in place of the UOW interview score. GPA, GAMSAT, and Casper results are not included in the weighting formula for offer of a place. Offers are made in early November with a small number of subsequent offers in December and January (if required). Offers are made for a specific place type, campus, and year only. Candidates who do not respond to their official Letter of Offer by the required due date specified by UOW will have the offer rescinded. The offer may be allocated to the next eligible applicant in a subsequent offer round, at the discretion of the University. Offers to applicants completing their degree in 2024 will be conditional on maintenance of the minimum required weighted GPA of 5.5. Evidence of completion must be produced for offer conditions to be cleared. Valid qualifying degrees used in GPA calculation must be completed by 31st December 2024. Orientation day will be held in Wollongong for all students on 23 January 2025, with the program commencing on 27 January 2025. |
||
Rural applicants |
UOW MD program offers a Rural Entry pathway with a proportion of places across both Medical Education tracks reserved for students from a rural background. Rural entry pathway applicants are ranked separately to domestic general entry pathway applicants. Please refer to the UOW Doctor of Medicine website for further details. To be eligible for consideration in the Rural Entry pathway, applicants will need to demonstrate residency in a MM2-MM7 area for 5 years consecutively or 10 years cumulatively. To meet this eligibility, applicants will need to complete the Rurality question in the GEMSAS Application Form and submit supporting documentation to GEMSAS by the due date. Applicants can check MMM status using the Health Workforce Locator (select Modified Monash 2019) For more information on documentary evidence required to demonstrate rural residency, see the GEMSAS admissions guide at the GEMSAS website. Within the Rural Entry pathway, a rurality adjustment will be applied to all rural applications based on the remoteness of their residence according to the Modified Monash criteria. This is in addition to the bonuses in the GSM Admissions Bonus Form. Rurality adjustment will be applied by the GSM in the following three tiers with the most remote applicants receiving the largest bonus:
Applicants are not required to submit additional information to the GSM – this adjustment will be applied automatically to all rural applicants based on the GEMSAS assessed rural classification. |

Medical Education Tracks and place types |
The UOW MD Program offers places within two tracks: the Rural-Regional Combined Medical Education Track, and the Rural End-to-End Medical Education Track. UOW MD Program – Rural-Regional Combined Medical Education Track UOW offers Commonwealth Supported Places (bonded and unbonded) under the Rural-Regional Combined Medical Education track. Students in the Rural-Regional Combined Medical Education Track will be based at UOW Wollongong campus or UOW Shoalhaven campus for Phase 1 (first 18 months) of the program. After Phase 1, students will then be allocated by the GSM to placements within NSW. Placements will be in regional, rural, and remote areas within NSW where the GSM has a clinical education/training site. UOW training sites and teaching hubs currently include placements in the Shoalhaven, Southern Highlands, Illawarra, Murrumbidgee, Clarence Valley, Northern Rivers, Central West, and Outback regions of NSW. These regions may change in the future. Students will need to relocate to the allocated site for the duration of the clinical placement. The Rural-Regional Combined Medical Education Track consists of a total of 54 places. These places are allocated across the General Entry pathway, Rural Entry Pathway and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pathway. A minimum of 32 places are reserved for Rural Entry pathway students. We aim that 15% of places in the Rural-Regional Combined Medical Education Track be filled by students from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pathway. Two place types are available:
UOW MD Program – Rural End-to-End Medical Education Track UOW also offers Commonwealth Supported Places under the Rural End-to-End Medical Education Track. Students in the Rural End-to-End Medical Education Track will be based at UOW Shoalhaven campus or UOW Southern Highlands campus for Phase 1 (first 18 months) of the program and then must reside and study in a rural NSW location, as determined by the medical school, for the duration of the entire four-year program. The Rural End-to End Medical Education Track consists of a total of 30 places. These places are allocated across the General Entry Pathway, Rural Entry Pathway and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pathway, and for students from the local region. We aim that 15% of places in the Rural End-to End Medical Education Track be filled by students from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pathway. One place type is available:
At the time of application, applicants will nominate the tracks and place types for their application. If an applicant does not nominate a certain track and place type, and that is the only place available, they will not be made an offer from UOW. Acceptance of a UOW MD place indicates acceptance of the track and place type allocation. Transfer between tracks or place types is not possible at time of offer or at any time a student is enrolled in the four years of the program. For more information on place types and tracks, please see the UOW Doctor of Medicine website. |
||
Campus allocation |
The MD program at the University of Wollongong is conducted at three campuses during Phase 1 (the first 18 months of the program). These campuses are Wollongong, Shoalhaven (Nowra), and Southern Highlands (Moss Vale). Students in the Rural-Regional Combined Medical Education Track will commence the program at Shoalhaven or Wollongong campus before being allocated to placements in regional, rural, and remote areas within NSW. Placements are determined by the medical school. Students in the Rural End-to-End Medical Education Track will commence the program at Shoalhaven or Southern Highlands campus and will be required to reside and study in a rural NSW location, as determined by the medical school, for the duration of the entire four-year program. All students enrolled in the UOW Doctor of Medicine are required to undertake clinical placements in regional and rural/remote communities across NSW in order to meet the requirements of the program. Students can expect to be required to undertake rural clinical placements in each phase of the program. The placements will vary in duration but may be up to a full academic year in length and require a student to relocate and live in the community of placement. At the time of application, applicants must indicate every campus they would be willing to study at during Phase 1. Applicants who are limited in their ability to study at all campuses may be less likely to be successful in gaining an offer. Acceptance of a UOW MD place indicates acceptance of the campus allocation. Transfer between campuses will not be considered. If an applicant does not accept an offer at a particular campus, then that offer (at that campus) will be made to the next applicant. Refer to the UOW Doctor of Medicine website for further information regarding UOW campuses, regions and communities in which we teach. Students in Phase 1 at Shoalhaven or Southern Highlands campus will attend their teaching sessions at the local campus and will engage in placements in their local community. On average, one day per week, students will travel to Wollongong for anatomy lessons and other selected teaching sessions. Students may be eligible for subsidies to assist with these travel costs. Students in Phase 1 based on the Wollongong campus will attend their teaching sessions at the local campus and will engage in placements in their local community. Students at Wollongong will also be also required to travel to Shoalhaven and Southern Highland campuses for some teaching sessions/placements during the Phase. In later Phases of the MD program all UOW medical students will undertake clinical placements in medical facilities within NSW including many and varied regional, rural, and remote communities. Students in the Rural End-to-End Medical Education Track will undertake all of their medical education in rural communities and students will be expected to relocate to those communities. |
||
Deferral |
Offers of a place are made for a specified year only and course commencement can only occur in January (Semester 1) of each calendar year. Deferral of a place is not possible. Applicants who do not, or are unable to accept an offer, must re-apply if they wish to undertake the course in a subsequent year. |

What happens to my application?
GEMSAS is a computerised matching system which calculates GPAs and bonuses, assesses applications for eligibility, and uses an algorithm to rank and allocate eligible applicants to their highest preferenced medical school. For more details about the matching algorithm, please refer to www.gemsas.edu.au/gemsas-processes.
Applications will be assessed according to the selection rules of each preferenced school. GEMSAS will assess the eligibility and competitiveness of all applicants for their first preference medical school. If the applicant is not eligible or not ranked highly enough they will be assessed for the second-preference school and so on until the applicant has either been allocated an interview at a preferenced medical school or all preferences have been exhausted.
Applications will be assessed again after interviews according to the selection rules of each preferenced school. Interview scores will be standardised and used by all participating schools. GEMSAS will assess the competitiveness of all interviewed applicants for their first-preference medical school. If the applicant is not ranked highly enough they will be assessed for the second-preference school and so on until the applicant has either been offered a place at a preferenced medical school or all preferences have been exhausted.
You cannot be considered for an offer at a school which is a higher preference than the school at which you were interviewed. They have already decided you do not meet their minimum criteria or you were not ranked highly enough to get an interview offer and that can't change in the subsequent offer round despite how well you do at interview.
Once an application is submitted NO FURTHER changes can be made.
How do I choose between valid GAMSAT results?
The GAMSAT validity period has been changed from 2 years to 4 years. GAMSAT results obtained from different sittings are directly comparable and can be used when applying to universities for up to four consecutive years in Australia.
To apply in 2024 for entry in 2025, ONLY the following results can be used: September 2020, March 2021, September 2021, March 2022, September 2022, March 2023, September 2023 and March 2024.
You are advised to compare results against the acceptable scores for each university and then select the result you wish the universities to consider.
Simply record in the Application Form the appropriate candidate identification number and year of sitting for the test you wish to use for selection. This will be the only GAMSAT result that will be provided to GEMSAS.
It is not possible to mix individual section scores from different years or to use different tests for different universities.
What GAMSAT scores are acceptable for entry to GEMPASS Australia medical schools?
GAMSAT results are valid for four years. To apply in 2024 for entry in 2025, ONLY the following results can be used: September 2020, March 2021, September 2021, March 2022, September 2022, March 2023, September 2023 and March 2024.
The GAMSAT is held in March and September, however results from the September sitting in the year of GEMSAS application cannot be used for that intake - it may only be used for designated future intakes:

Which school should I apply to?
There are ten Medical Schools in GEMPASS Australia. Domestic applicants may nominate up to six preferences. Please take into consideration the special character of each medical school and choose as preferences those schools whose philosophies, location and special character best matches your requirements.
There are significant differences in entry requirements between the schools. You might find that you have a much better chance of gaining admission to one school over another. Please ensure you make your selections with care. Once preferences are entered and your application submitted, you will not be able to change them. Subsequent transfers between Schools are unlikely to be approved.
If you are not prepared to undertake the course at a particular university you should not list it.
You are advised to put only medical schools and types of places that you are prepared to accept. You are strongly advised to obtain detailed information from the schools' websites to ensure you are fully informed on both the admissions criteria and the structure of the individual programs. If you are offered a place and you decline it, or if you allow your offer to lapse, then your application will be withdrawn from further processing and you will NOT receive another offer in the current offer period. There is no requirement to list the full six preferences available to you.
I want to change my preferences/types of places.
Once you have submitted your application, this is not possible.
Exceptions:
The University of Notre Dame Australia, Sydney may accept one change of type of place per application year should you wish to add or remove the Full Fee-paying type of place. No other offer type changes will be considered. Changes must be made in writing directly with the Institution on or before 4pm AEST 2nd October 2024. See the schools' pages in this guide for details.
The University of Melbourne may accept one change of type of place per application year should you wish to add or remove the Full Fee-paying type of place. No other offer type changes will be considered. All changes must be submitted through Melbourne Medical School's 'Fee-Type Change Request' form no later than 4pm AEST 27th September 2024. See the schools' pages in this guide for details.
My degree is more than 10 years old; am I still eligible to apply?
Bachelor degrees that were awarded more than 10 years prior to the anticipated commencement date may not be acceptable at the school to which you are applying. Most schools accept postgraduate study within the last 10 years as reason to waive this rule. They will then calculate the GPA on the most recent eligible study; see schools' entries for details.
To confirm whether your degree will be recognised, check the relevant schools' entries in this Guide and their websites and contact the schools if you are still in doubt.
The prerequisite subjects required for entry to the University of Queensland must be completed within 10 years of commencing the MD.
Completed vs Graduated?
All medical schools will use the year of completion or award, not the year of graduation. For example, if your final semester of study was Semester 2, 2015 but the degree was conferred in March 2016. The degree will be considered to have been completed in 2015.
Which degree will you use to calculate my GPA (the Qualifying/Key Degree)?
We will generally use the GPA from the most recently completed qualifying/key degree and this may include a degree you will complete in the year in which you apply, except for UWA (see school website for details on what study is included) who consider the most recent three years FTE (full time equivalent) of valid study (complete or incomplete). See the schools’ entries in this Guide for more details.
The GEMSAS medical schools have considered options for changing GPA methodology, recognising the impact of COVID-19 on 2020 study. As a result a number of schools have made changes, deciding whether or not to include 2020 results in GPA calculations. See the school entry section for changes/updates.
What is the definition of an Honours Year, in terms of GEMSAS GPA calculations?
An Honours Degree is a research-intense award pegged at Level 8 in the AQF. One-year honours programs are a specialised year of study undertaken as an extension to an undergraduate degree – this is a ‘standalone’ Honours award. Some four-year (or more) undergraduate programs have honours embedded within their structure, this is an ‘embedded’ Honours award.
I have done (or I am completing) a standalone Honours. Will this be used for selection?
We include Honours degrees in GPA calculations if they are complete or will be complete by the end of the year (other than the exceptions below). Typically, the majority of Honours results are only available at the end of the Honours year and we do a GPA calculation for allocating applicants to interviews in the middle of the year. If you are currently studying an Honours year then for the interview score a Final GPA year will only be included if sufficient results are available at the time of assessment. The GPA will otherwise be calculated from the prior two years of available results and when the Honours results are available, they will be used to confirm any conditional offer you may have been made. If you do have results for Honours from Semester 1, these may be used in your GPA calculation together with results from the last two years of your preceding study.
Exception:
For Griffith, University of Melbourne and UQ, if a standalone Honours degree is not completed by 31 July, it will not be used.
For UWA, if a standalone (or embedded) Honours degree is not completed by mid-year in the year of application the honours level study will not be included in GPA calculations.
For Macquarie University, if there are less than 0.5 FTE of results in the standalone Honours degree from Semester 1 completed, the Bachelor degree will be used to calculate the GPA. The Honours degree will be the key degree and a conditional offer will be issued on completion of Honours.
Refer to the relevant schools' entries in this Guide and their websites to determine if your current Honours will be used in the calculation.
Will my Honours subject results or the overall Honours grade be used in my GPA calculation?
For Australian qualifications, where a Standalone Honours year is eligible to be included; if your Honours year consists of subjects which have results (and no classification is available) then these will be used to calculate your GPA. If there are no subject results, and only an overall Honours grade, then that will be used (refer to the GPA Conversion Table in this guide).
If both subject results and an overall Honours classification are available:
ANU, Griffith*, Notre Dame, UWA, Wollongong the honours classification GPA and subject results GPA will be compared and the higher value will be used.
Deakin, Macquarie, the University of Melbourne will use Honours subject results only.
UQ will use the final Honours classification (as per the conversion table) for both standalone and embedded honours programs.
*Griffith will also use this method for the honours year of an embedded honours degree.
Only UQ and Griffith will consider the Honours Classification for an embedded program. All other institutions will use subject results only.
What is the minimum FTE (Full Time Equivalent) study load required for any GPA year to be calculated?
The below table outlines the minimum graded results required for any GPA year to be calculated. If the minimum graded requirement threshold is not met, that GPA year will be left blank. For current study, if insufficient results are available at time of assessment then Final year will not be included in the GPA until additional results are received.

How will my 2020 results be used in GPA calculations?
The GEMSAS medical schools have considered options for changing GPA methodology, recognising the impact of COVID-19 on 2020 study. As a result a number of schools have made changes, deciding whether or not to include 2020 results in GPA calculations. See the school entry section for changes/updates.
The below rules apply to all applicants consistently. GEMSAS is unable to make amendments to our process to account for any perceived impact of COVID-19 on your results. Therefore, any potential changes made to your grades to compensate for COVID-19 disruptions will need to be discussed with your teaching university.
For ANU, Macquarie, Notre Dame, Wollongong, UWA and UQ, all 2020 results will be used in GPA calculations.
For Deakin, all 2020 results will be excluded from GPA calculations.
For Griffith, 2020 results will be used in GPA calculations. Applicants may request to have ALL Semester 1/Trimester 1 grades from 2020 disregarded. Please refer to the Griffith school entry section for more details.
For the University of Melbourne, results for 2020 subjects completed before the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e. January 2020 to March 2020) and results for standalone honours subjects completed in 2020 will be included in the GPA calculations for entry to the Doctor of Medicine program. All other 2020 subject results (i.e. completed from April 2020 to December 2020) will be excluded for entry. This is applicable from 2022 for all forthcoming intakes.
Where 2020 results are excluded we would not seek to include earlier results in their place.
I am worried that my studies have been adversely impacted by COVID-19. Can I ask GEMSAS to have this taken into consideration for my GPA calculation?
In response to COVID-19 disruptions, GEMSAS medical schools have made changes to the way that GPAs involving 2020 studies will be calculated. However, your GPA will still be calculated based on the grades awarded by your teaching university. Any potential changes made to your grades to compensate for COVID-19 disruptions will need to be discussed with your teaching university.
How do I allocate subjects to years to calculate my GPA?
First, read the documents at www.gemsas.edu.au/gpa-calculations.
The GPA is calculated from the last three ‘GPA years’ of the key degree/s, where a ‘GPA year’ is the equivalent of one year of full-time study*. This may not necessarily be the same as a calendar year or all the units at one level of study. You must determine the standard full-time load per year for your institution. One way to determine this is to take the number of credits required for degree completion and divide that by the standard duration of the program. This will give you the required credits to assign to each GPA year. We allocate by the order in which subjects were taken and not by the level of the subjects. The most recent study is attributed to Final year before working back to F-1 and F-2 GPA years until 3FTE of study is included in the GPA.
*Exception: for The University of Queensland (UQ) the GPA is calculated over the entire duration of the degree and is not divided into years, please check UQ’s school entry in this Guide for further information.
Example:
Assume that all the units you did were of equal credit point value.
If the normal program requirement is to do 24 units in a 3-year degree you would allocate 8 units a year.
Working backwards chronologically take the 8 most recently completed units and allocate them to the Final GPA Year. Then take the next 8 units and allocate them to the Final-1 GPA Year and the remaining 8 units will be the Final-2 GPA Year.
A GPA calculator is available for use on our application page (https://applygemsas.edu.au/gemsas/#/gpa-calc).
How are subjects allocated to the GPA years, if I have non-standard semesters?
Subjects are still allocated chronologically in the year they were taken. If you have undertaken any non-standard teaching periods outside of the standard Semester 1 and Semester 2 teaching periods offered at most institutions, where possible the dates of these teaching periods will inform how they are incorporated into your GPA calculation. You may be contacted for further clarification via email by the GEMSAS assessment team. If you do receive an email you will be required to attach evidence from your Institution that shows the semesters in which subjects were taken, and the overall chronology of semesters (e.g. unofficial transcript or enrolment record) via email to
How are credits from prior study used in the GPA calculation?
The way in which credit from prior study is used in GPAs varies based on several factors. Some key points are given below, but please see the GPA section on our website for further details - GPA guidelines
- If results for specified credit are shown and they were studied within an eligible key degree, they will be included in GPA calculations. However, specified credit, as per the definition, requires the key degree record to show the subject codes, names, weightings and results. Most results retrieved through ARTS do not show this information.
- If prior credit does not meet this definition, it is treated as unspecified credit, i.e. we will use the most recent eligible prior study up to the number of credit points awarded as credit for prior study. Please note that we do not use hard copy transcripts where results are available via ARTS, and we will not accept transcripts provided as clarification regarding specified credit not shown in ARTS.
- For UWA the calculation is from units taken in chronological order, regardless of exemptions, credit or advanced standing which may have been applied to the most recent degree.
- Not all institutions will include study from AQF level 8 and above in the GPA as credit to an AQF level 7 program.
- Programs below AQF Level 7 (such as Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, and Associate Degrees) are typically not factored into GPA calculations.
Who uses postgraduate study?
The following schools use postgraduate study in GPA calculations –
- ANU will include Graduate Diploma and Masters by Coursework results in the 3-year GPA calculation if the degree is completed or due to be completed by 31 December in the year of application
- Deakin will calculate the GPA on the most recently completed three years FTE of study, including Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters by coursework if successfully completed by 31 July 2024.
- Griffith will calculate the GPA using the most recently completed qualifying/key degree/s (a Combined Bachelor/ Masters, Combined Bachelor/Postgraduate Diploma, Masters by coursework; Masters by Research; or PhD) if completed by 31 July 2024. Griffith allocates an overall GPA of 7.00 for completed PhDs (when it is the most recent qualification) and a 7.00 for each full time year of a completed Masters by Research (up to a maximum duration of two years). To complete the 3-FTE years of study when using a Masters degree, the next most recent qualifying/key degree will be included as required.
- Macquarie University will calculate a GPA including Graduate Diploma and Coursework Masters, if this degree will be completed by 31 December in the year of application. Completed Higher Degree Research Masters and PhD will be used in GPA calculations if completed at the time of application.
- The University of Notre Dame will calculate the GPA on the most recently completed 3-FTE years of study including qualifications at Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, and Masters by coursework level, if completed by 31 July 2024.
- UQ will accept completed Postgraduate Diplomas, Masters and PhDs as standalone qualifying/key degrees if successfully completed by the 31st of July in the year of application.
- UWA will use Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas and Masters by Coursework in a 3-year GPA calculation whether complete or incomplete. Applicants with completed PhDs will receive a GPA of 7.00.
- University of Wollongong will include Graduate Diploma and Masters by Coursework results in the 3-year GPA calculation if the degree is completed or due to be completed by 31 December in the year of application.
Please see the “Entry requirements - All applicants” section for more detailed information. University of Melbourne uses the most recently-completed undergraduate degree only in GPA calculations.
How will GEMSAS determine comparability of overseas qualification/s to the Australian Qualification Framework?
GEMSAS assessors will review all overseas documents that are received and determine the comparison level of the qualification under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Often, this means confirming that a Bachelor degree studied overseas is comparable in educational level to a Bachelor degree completed in Australia. However, GEMSAS will also assess other types of post-secondary overseas qualifications claimed by applicants, such as postgraduate studies and exchange programs.
For all overseas assessments GEMSAS uses the Australian government's Department of Education (DE) (previously known as NOOSR/AEI NOOSR) guidelines and UK ENIC (previously UK NARIC) for verification and level comparability. Where GEMSAS is unable to determine the comparison level of a qualification using these guidelines, the assessment is passed to the institution/s to which the applicant has applied.
For more information on GEMSAS Overseas qualification assessments please visit: https://www.gemsas.edu.au/gpa-calculations/
How will my overseas study be converted to an Australian comparable scale?
GEMSAS uses an Australian 7-point grade point average scale to calculate GPAs. As many other countries use a different grading system, we may need to convert applicants' grades to a 7-point GPA scale before their GEMSAS GPA can be calculated.
GEMSAS will take the actual results from applicants’ overseas university transcripts and use the institution grading information provided on the transcript to convert these grades to a 7-point GPA scale. To do this, we need to know the minimum required pass marks and the maximum achievable mark. GEMSAS will generally use the percentage mark where a transcript shows both an exact percentage mark and a letter grade.
If there is no information on a transcript regarding the grading scale, GEMSAS assessors may take further steps, such as researching the institution and checking the grading system on the institution’s official website, or using guidelines provided by The Department of Education (DE). In some cases, we may request applicants provide further documentation that confirms the grading system used by their institution.
If you know the minimum and maximum marks you can use the GPA Calculator on the GEMSAS website.
I have studied an undergraduate degree with less than 3 FTE standard duration, am I eligible to apply?
When the standard course duration of an undergraduate degree is less 3 FTE when studied in full (credit was not received from another program) this may not be accepted for approved study and GPA for all institutions. Please refer to each school's section for further details on their admission requirements.
I was interviewed at my 3rd preference and I did really well in the interview but I would rather be offered a place at my first preference. Is that possible?
You cannot be considered for an offer at a school above the preference of the school at which you were interviewed. They have already decided that either you do not meet their minimum criteria or you were not ranked highly enough to get an interview offer. That status can't change in the subsequent offer rounds despite how well you perform at interview.
What is the standardisation of interview scores?
The standardisation of interview scores ensures comparability between institutions. This is a statistical process which uses means and standard deviations from the different interview score distributions to put all the sets of scores onto the same scale.
What happens to my application after interview?
If you are not made an offer by the school at which you were interviewed, your application will remain in the system and will automatically be considered by your lower preference schools (at which you are eligible for consideration) or by the school at which you were interviewed (for a later offer) until you are either offered a place or all preferences have been exhausted. If you are interviewed by your final preference school, your application cannot be considered by any other preference.
Can I get my interview score or ranking data?
GEMSAS is not able to provide any ranking data or interview scores. Many factors impact on who gets an offer and apart from the selection components used, there are also factors at play including your willingness to accept bonded or fee places, whether you are a rural or an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander applicant and whether or not you were eligible for bonuses/adjustment or for special sub-quota places.
How are offers released?
All offers are decided on the same day and unsuccessful applicants are notified by email that day. GEMSAS and some medical schools advise successful applicants by email but for some medical schools offers are complex to generate, so these notifications may take a few days to reach you. Please make sure you have listed
How many offers will I receive?
Successful applicants are made only one offer each year. Once you have been made an offer, you are not eligible for subsequent round offers. If you decline your offer you are removed from the applicant pool and can apply again next year.
I want to decline an offer of a place. Can I be considered for another place or receive another offer?
Applicants are made only one offer each year. Once you have been made an offer, you are not eligible for subsequent round offers. If you decline your offer you are removed from the applicant pool and can apply again next year.
What is a conditional offer?
If you are made an offer of a place, and you have not completed your degree (or prerequisites for the University of Queensland, or you are undertaking additional bachelor or postgraduate studies for UWA), then the offer will be conditional. When we get your final results we will calculate your final GPA and check that it meets any conditions the school may have put on your offer (e.g. maintaining a stated GPA). If it does, your offer will be confirmed, and if it doesn't meet the conditions the offer will be withdrawn. If you studied at an ARTS university, we will try to get your final results and confirmation of completion of your degree electronically.
We may have difficulty obtaining your final results and confirmation of completion of your degree and may request your assistance to encourage your university to upload your results and completion data and to authorise the release of this information to GEMSAS.
If you studied at a non-ARTS university you will need to upload an official academic transcript that shows final results and evidence of completion of your degree.
I had better GPA and GAMSAT scores than a friend and they were offered a place at X University. Why wasn't I offered a place?
Selection is very complex and many factors impact on whether or not you will get an offer. There are many reasons why an applicant with the same or lower GPA and GAMSAT scores as you may have been offered a place when you were not.
- They may have performed better in the interview and/or portfolio or personal statements
- They may have come from a rural background
- They may be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island descent
- They may have received bonus points for postgraduate study
- They may have received adjustment/bonus points or come through a preferential entry scheme that recognises disadvantage
- They may have accepted a BMP or Fee place where you indicated that you would not be prepared to accept one of these places
- They may have accepted a place in a special sub-quota
I have not received an offer in the main round - what happens now?
If you do not receive an offer of a place in the main round of offers after interview, your application will remain in the system. Additional offers may be made during December and January after final results of applicants completing their qualifying/key degree are known.
It is NOT possible for applicants to change their preferences after the application closing date.
What happens if I am also applying for courses outside the GEMPASS Australia medicine courses?
There are many applicants for medical school places who will not be offered an interview or a place. If you have been offered a place in another course or by an institution not participating in GEMSAS and you intend to accept that place, then please be considerate of fellow applicants and withdraw your application for all GEMPASS Australia courses as soon as possible. Withdraw by emailing
What is the USI number and is it a mandatory requirement?
A USI is a reference number made up of ten numbers and letters. It creates an online record of your nationally recognised training and qualifications attained in Australia. Yes, it is a mandatory requirement to provide your USI number in the application. For more information see http://www.usi.gov.au/
I didn't receive confirmation of my submitted information or my payment
After completing the Application Form you will need to SUBMIT your application (once done you will receive an email from GEMSAS confirming your application has been submitted). You will then be taken to the payment system to make your payment. Once your payment has been made successfully you will be shown a receipt screen and you will receive an email from GEMSAS.
If you do not receive either email, please log into your GEMSAS account and check your My Emails page. If the successful submission and payment emails are not visible, please email
I have previously applied through GEMSAS
If you have previously applied through GEMSAS, you are still required to register anew online and complete and submit a new application.
Very Important: If there has been no change to your education history and you applied through GEMSAS within the last two years you do not need to provide GEMSAS with your academic documents again. You will be contacted should GEMSAS require any further academic documentation.
For Deakin adjustment (bonus) exceptions see the Deakin school entry.
I have studied at the University of Notre Dame. How will the change to using ARTS results from Notre Dame impact my application?
Starting in 2024, the University of Notre Dame is adopting the ARTS process. This means if you're a current or former student, we'll attempt to access your academic results directly from the University electronically. You won't need to submit transcripts unless requested by GEMSAS staff. In case of any discrepancies, ARTS records will be used for GPA calculation and eligibility assessments.
Do I need to pay for each medical school preference?
You pay a single fee of $264 and this covers up to six preferences.
I can't see the documentation requirements and coversheets for submitting supporting documentation
Documentation requirements and coversheets are generated according to your selections and responses. As your application progresses, the Documentation page with:
- documentation requirements for academic transcripts and English Language Competency documentation and
- coversheets for rural background and Deakin Adjustment (bonus)
will appear on the left of your screen. You will only have access to your coversheets once you have submitted and paid for your application. To access your documentation requirements and coversheets, after you have submitted and paid for your application, log into your application and select the Documentation button on the My Applications page.
If you are unsure if you should supply supporting documentation, please check the Supporting documentation and Rurality sections of this guide.
If you cannot upload and/or email any of the documents mentioned above, please email
How do I email my supporting documentation (Rural background and/or Deakin adjustments (bonuses))?
Your coversheet/s will describe in detail where to send your supporting documentation, deadlines for emailing the documentation and what type of documents can be accepted. It is very important that you read your coversheet/s carefully.
How do I upload my supporting documentation (Education transcripts and/or English Language Competency)?
The documentation requirements page will describe in detail where to upload your supporting documentation, deadlines for uploading the documentation and what type of documents can be accepted. It is very important that you read this page carefully. Any incorrect documentation provided may delay the processing of your application.
Are there any restrictions on the types of academic documentation accepted?
Yes, we will only accept PDF or JPEG file formats, max 15MB. Word documents (.doc, docs, .rtf) are not accepted.
For Australian and New Zealand qualifications digital documents issued by My eQuals are accepted, provided they meet the My eQuals guidelines. You must download a PDF of your document from the My eQuals portal which is digitally signed by your institution and has the required security features including the certificate key or blue banner verification. Sharing links for download via My eQuals is not permitted. For example, certified documents viewed in Adobe Acrobat Reader have a blue ribbon above the document stating: “Certified by the issuing education provider… all signatures are valid”. Please note that the blue ribbon/certification may not be visible in some web browsers and non-Adobe applications.
For overseas qualifications colour scans of official hard copy documents or institution-issued secure PDF documents are accepted. Scans must be fully legible, including any notes, codes, logos and legends. Whether security features on a PDF meet GEMSAS requirements is at the discretion of GEMSAS Assessment. Documents which do not meet security requirements, may be rejected, or may only be conditionally accepted.
Scan each document separately and include both sides (front and back) if applicable. If your academic documents have information on both sides (even if it is generic information rather than your academic results), please ensure that you scan both sides of the document. Transcripts received from the same qualification can be combined into one file.
It is very important you read the information on the Documentation requirements page as any incorrect documentation may delay the processing of your application.
GEMSAS reserves the right to sight the original of any document submitted as part of a GEMSAS application.
I don't have a scanner. How can I send my documents?
Phone applications can be used to scan your documents (e.g. Cam Scanner, Adobe Scan) but askew or poorly focused scans will not be accepted. Ensure that the entire document is scanned, without scanning external surround such as tabletops or a frame or your fingers. The document needs to fill the entire space and all edges of the document must be visible. The documents must not look warped by the scan.
I don't have an original transcript; can I submit a certified copy?
No, only a scanned official transcript/s or digitally secure PDFs will be accepted. Screenshots, photos, certified copies, unofficial results and online printouts are not accepted.
A Statement of Results is not acceptable and is not considered in place of a full transcript, nor is a printout of an academic record.
If you are required to provide documentation, detailed guidelines will be available in the Documentation page in the GEMSAS application portal.
My transcript is not in English; should I provide a translation?
Any qualification undertaken in a language other than English must be documented by the original transcript, accompanied by an officially translated original (by a NAATI translator), in English. Scans of original hard copy translations (featuring the translator's original stamp and signature on every page) can be uploaded in your account. Please see the Academic Document Submission Guidelines for instructions on supplying digital translation documents (which feature a digitally inserted stamp or QR code).
I'm still studying this year; do I need to submit a 2024 transcript?
Yes. Applicants completing their qualifying/key degree in 2024 will be assessed on the basis of the information available at the time of application.
If your results are from an ARTS university, your Semester 1, 2024 results will be electronically retrieved during June and July. If you have any unpaid fees at your university we will not be able to retrieve your results until these have been attended to. Please do this ASAP.
Please note that we do not use hard copy transcripts where results are available via ARTS, and we will not accept transcripts provided as clarification regarding study not shown in ARTS.
For study at a non-ARTS university, in Semester 1, 2024 please upload an official academic transcript as soon as possible. Please upload the required official transcripts and/or completion certificate by Wednesday 17 July 2024.
Applicants completing their degree in 2024 will only be offered an interview if the GPA at the time of application (with 2024 results to date) meets the required level.
Such applicants should also note that while decisions on interview offers will be made on the basis of results available at the time of application, final 2024 results may be used to determine offers of a place. Refer to each school's entry in this Guide for more information.
I'm currently studying and plan on taking an Early Exit, what do I do?
If you are currently studying a program and intend on taking an Early Exit or Alternative Award at the end of the year, you must declare this in your application. You should select the actual year you are due to complete your study, list that the completion status is “I am currently studying, but will not complete the qualification this year” and complete the early exit question that will generate.
If after you submit your application you realise you did not claim this information, or you decide you will be taking an early exit, you must inform GEMSAS (
Examples of combined programs that could lead to an early exit are:
Bachelor/Bachelor
Bachelor/Master
Bachelor/Postgraduate Diploma
Bachelor with Embedded Honours
For example, if you are currently studying a Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts and at the end of the year plan to complete and be awarded the Bachelor of Science, this should be declared as an early exit on your application. Similarly, if you are currently studying a Bachelor/Masters program, and plan on taking an early exit to be awarded the single Bachelor degree then this should also be declared.
Exchange studies and transcripts
Exchange studies are part of your degree and therefore we use the results from those studies in calculating your GPA. Exchange studies may appear on your home university transcript as pass/fail subjects, but we use the attained results from the exchange institution's transcript to calculate your GPA.
You must obtain and supply an official transcript for any exchange studies you have done. Exception: The University of Western Australia will normally use the results that appear on the home university's transcript (in most cases this is an ungraded pass or an ungraded fail). Please see the Faculty website for further information and for exceptions to this general rule.
My declared study and/or results have changed. What should I do?
Ensure you inform
Ensure you inform
Note that ARTS results are retrieved on request and unless you notify us of updates, we will not request ARTS results outside of the scheduled times.
What study should I declare in the application?
ALL tertiary study is to be declared (this includes completed and incomplete study), whether relevant or not to your qualifying/key degree.
I have lodged through GEMSAS two or more applications for medicine
Only your first submitted application will be processed, regardless of which application has been paid for.
How do I apply for the Deakin RTS Tier 1 pathway and do I need a current GAMSAT?
You can only have one medicine application.
Either:
- An application to the Deakin RTS Tier 1 pathway and any other university or any other pathway through Deakin, which would require a current GAMSAT.
Please continue with your application, as per the normal process.
OR
- An application only to the Deakin RTS Tier 1 pathway without a current GAMSAT.
Please contactThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for process information and requirements.
If you are applying to Deakin for the RTS Tier 1 pathway ONLY and will not use or do not have a current GAMSAT, and are NOT applying to any other medical school through GEMSAS:
- Please email
This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for process information and requirements. - This is for applicants who are ONLY preferencing Deakin University and selecting the Deakin RTS Tier 1 pathway (select Rural background and select the Deakin RTS Tier 1 pathway in the application).
- You should ensure you are eligible for the Deakin RTS Tier 1 pathway prior to applying (see the Deakin school entry in this guide).
- If you are assessed as not eligible for the Deakin RTS Tier 1 pathway, your application will no longer be considered.
If you have a current GAMSAT, and are applying to other medical schools through GEMSAS:
- If you are applying for the Deakin RTS Tier 1 pathway, you must ensure that you are eligible for this pathway, i.e. you must be eligible for rural background AND meet the criteria for the Deakin RTS Tier 1 pathway – see the Deakin school entry in this guide for more information.
- When Deakin considers your application, with a current GAMSAT, for the Deakin RTS Tier 1 pathway, it will be considered using the criteria outlined in the AG for this pathway (i.e. your GAMSAT score will not be considered and if you do not meet the 10 year rule, it will be waived).
GEMSAS policy will be enforced: Only your first submitted application will be processed, regardless of which application has been paid for. Once submitted no further updates or changes to your application will be allowed.
Applicants who have had a ban imposed by ACER are not eligible to be considered for entry into the Deakin Rural Training Stream during the time of their ban.
How do I submit my written application for the Deakin University Rural Training Stream (RTS)?
The written application for the RTS is completed in the application form and submitted once you submit your application. To avoid any loss of data due to session closure we suggest you complete your written application offline first and copy it into the live online application once you are satisfied with your work. As character count methods differ between programs you will need to check your written application using the review of responses generated PDF. If your written application was not copied in its entirety you may need to do some further online editing to reduce the character count. Some special characters, such as quotation marks, may be removed for security and formatting reasons.
What information/emails, that have been sent to my email address, will be visible on the My Emails page in my GEMSAS account?

For information on Grade Point Averages and how to calculate your GPA please view the documents on our website, https://www.gemsas.edu.au/gpa-calculations/. A GPA calculator is available for use on our application page at https://applygemsas.edu.au/gemsas/#/gpa-calc.
In general, this information applies to all schools but please note local variations outlined on university websites and in the university specific information pages in this Guide.
Exception: The University of Queensland (UQ), please check UQ's school entry in this Guide for further information.
Before you calculate your GPA, you should read the sections 'Before You Apply' and 'How to Apply'.
The GEMSAS medical schools have considered options for changing GPA methodology, recognising the impact of COVID-19 on 2020 study. As a result a number of schools have made changes, deciding whether or not to include 2020 results in GPA calculations. See the school entry section for changes/updates.
International applicants must apply directly to all universities at which they wish to study. GEMSAS accepts and processes applications from domestic applicants only.
