Grade Point Average (GPA) Calculations
What is the GPA?
The GPA indicates the level of performance in applicants qualifying/key degree for their GEMSAS application.
The GPA is one of several factors considered by Medical Schools when issuing interview and place offers. Other factors include performance in the GAMSAT (Graduate Medical School Admission Test), Casper test, interview outcomes, and eligibility for Medical School specific bonuses.
The disciplines that you have studied, and where you have undertaken your qualifying/key degree, will not impact your GPA.
How is my GPA calculated?
GEMSAS calculates GPAs (Grade Point Average) for all GEMSAS applicants who meet the minimum eligibility requirements to be considered for a place in each Medical School’s course.
GEMPASS Australia Medical Schools have reviewed the calculation of GPAs across Medical Schools and have agreed on a framework and rules around the calculation of a base GPA. However, Medical Schools often have local variations in how they calculate their GPAs, including which studies are used. This means that GEMSAS usually needs to calculate several GPAs for each applicant.
For details on how the GPA is calculated and used for selection purposes, please view the individual Medical Schools Admissions Guide pages. Applicants can also estimate a GPA for their own purposes using the GPA calculator.
Covid Impacted Grades
If you received COVID-19 impacted grades while undertaking studies at the University of Melbourne (denoted by a ‘^’ in your UoM student portal and academic transcript), and you would like these results to count toward your GEMSAS GPAs*, you need to submit a request to the University of Melbourne for these results to be transferred as part of the Arts Results Transfer System (ARTS).
The request must be submitted within the following timeframes:
- For completed or discontinued studies, 10 working days before you lodge your GEMSAS application
- For currently enrolled studies, by Friday 19 June 2026
*Exception: If you’re applying via GEMSAS for entry to the UoM Doctor of Medicine course, UoM COVID-19 impacted grades for 2021 subjects will be included in your GEMSAS GPA for the UoM regardless of whether you submit the request mentioned above for these results to be included in ARTS. Please refer to the Doctor of Medicine Selection guidelines for further information.
